TEACHER ROOM: Strategies to work with students with disruptive behavior.

in #edu-venezuela5 years ago

Currently, one of the main problems in our classrooms are behavioral problems in children and adolescents.

When we speak of disrutive behavior, we refer to inappropriate behavior that is detrimental to the proper functioning of the class in relation to tasks, relationships with classmates, compliance with class norms or lack of respect for the class. and the teacher.

This behavior is a mismatch in the development of the child, since it prevents the creation and maintenance of healthy social relationships with peers and adults. We must remember that inappropriate behavior is usually caused by psychological factors that cause it: a sense of abandonment, frustration, low self-esteem, lack of norms in the core of the family. These responses are tactics acquired or learned to get attention.

Disruptive behavior is common in school age, however in some cases, due to its frequency and consistency over time, it becomes a major problem.

To establish patterns of behavior, it would be good for teachers to record behavior. This will help us look for strategies to help solve the problem.

There are no magic formulas, and in many cases, what works and for some does not have an impact on others. However, as education professionals, we can follow a series of guidelines that will help to relax the environment and reduce the incidence of this type of behavior:

✔ Self-control of adults, understand that the behavior is trying to provoke anger in others, so do not let them manipulate them, do not engage in discussions, stay calm and do not raise the tone of the voice. Try to talk quietly, not too close, and never hold the person. If you do not raise the tone of the voice, ask the student not to do so. We can be strong without sounding aggressive. It is recommended that the child feel safe in an adult who applies corrective measures in a firm but non-threatening tone.

✔ Apply the rules of coexistence to all students, which is visible to all (posters, murals ...), where the rules of behavior are established clearly and precisely. It is necessary that students intervene in this process, since in this way they will consider it as goals that must be reached, and not as imposed norms.

✔ Encourage group thinking, offer solutions for different dynamics in the classroom, this is a way to teach students how to solve their problems.

✔ Avoid getting our full attention, because otherwise this behavior will increase. Remember at the beginning or at the end of the lesson that this behavior is undesirable.

✔ When aggressive behavior occurs or is triggered, we must respond, but not react disproportionately. Well isolate it so it does not have an audience. When you calm down, you should maintain visual contact with the student, avoid entering the game or discuss, the teacher is an authority figure, is not negotiable, should not try to be taller or humiliate or enter into discussions. Make clear what we are looking for, what the rules are and the consequences of non-compliance.

✔ Avoid situations that may cause or cause a malfunction, not intentionally. It will be easier to do it if we have the previous entry, similar to the one mentioned above.

✔ Act as a model: be aware of how we also make mistakes. I apologize if necessary. They will copy the model that we offer them.

✔ Do not pay attention to minor faults.

✔ We can reduce disruptive behavior by verbalizing positive expectations. Marking what we expect from them helps a lot. Also use positive reinforcement.

✔ With the smallest the chip economy is a very effective technique.

✔ Create dynamic classes, where there are many changes of activity, where tasks and activities are graduated at the level of difficulty.

✔ Approach the conflicting student and use humor. This will generate a more relaxed atmosphere in the classroom.

We can reduce destructive behavior by expressing positive expectations. Marking what we expect from them helps a lot. Also use positive reinforcement.
