How can we teach children how to write.

in #edu-venezuela5 years ago

Writing is one of the most powerful weapons we must teach our children for the development of their cognitive faculties. Not only helps the development of faculties but also helps the coordination of movements and promotes dexterity, that is, the coupling of arms, hands and fingers for the execution of movements.

Children begin to write progressively. In general, children initiate written language in the last phase of early childhood education, around 5 years. At this stage they learn to write their name and become familiar with written language. However, the approach to reading and writing does not start until primary school, when the child is 6 years old.

The learning of writing passes through 4 phases: letters or numbers with points, the phase of copying, writing dictation and spontaneous writing. It is very important that parents know each stage, in order to discover the child's difficulties.

Phase 1: Letters or numbers with points.

This stage is the one that is implemented in initial education. It consists of providing the child with letters or numbers with a point which must be drawn with a continuous line. This way you will become familiar with the shape of each letter or number and at the same time work your fine motor skills.

Phase 2: the phase of copying.

The child begins with the simplest, such as: vertical, horizontal, inclined and curved stripes. Later the child moves towards more complex models, such as: copying letters, numbers, syllables or words. Finally this learning occurs when the child is able to write what he thinks or imagines.

Phase 3: Writing to dictation.

After 6 years, the child is introduced in this phase, however it is much more complex than the previous phase. Here there is no longer a visual model, but hearing-vision. The child is helped with a sound and must be able to differentiate what he hears, translate them into letters and write it on paper. For this it is necessary that the child has a good hearing, auditory memory, visual memory and appropriate fine motor skills to be able to copy the models that are represented mentally.

Phase 4: Spontaneous writing.

In this stage there is no sound by which the child can help himself. The child writes what is represented at the mental level, that is, what the child is imagining. This capacity begins to develop in primary school and year after year it becomes more complex, resulting in the possibility that children do essays, exams of open questions or jobs.

Recommendations for parents:

  • For children to have an interest in learning to write, it is advisable to read them stories when they are little ones, because in this way they will be interested in the content of books and understand each of the concepts provided.

  • The example is necessary for our children to want to write well, so they should consider activities such as writing a story that will be shared with the family members.

  • It is necessary to help the child through simple activities, such as writing a vowel or a number. The idea is for children to identify what letter or number it is.

  • It is convenient to place posters with letters and numbers in your room so that the child becomes familiar.

  • Provide the letters of the alphabet so that the child forms words.

  • Teach them to make a draft first of what they want to express and in this way organize their ideas.

  • Take advantage of their mistakes as a source of learning. Do not correct them directly, ask them to check and correct themselves.

  • Learning does not include screaming or mistreatment.

  • Always congratulate the child for each achievement and reward him, whether it be with a cake, a cookie, an ice cream, a ride, etc. This means for them an excellent reward to fight for.
