Class Organization

Classes will meet twice a week for an hour. During the first half of the class, students will receive direct instruction while the second half will give students the ability to apply what they learned to their own project.

General Description

In "Game Development I," the students will learn the basics of what makes a game, how to come up with a solid plan (including written instructions), and how to implement that plan through play testing and player feedback. At the end of the course, the students should have a playable board game that they will have a chance to display to the community. Though not directly connected to video games, a board game contains many of the same requirements, and it gives the students a chance to create something without the need of a deep understanding of the software we use.

Goals

  1. Understand what makes a game a game.
  2. Create a prototype game and revise the game.
  3. Gain basic understanding of the computers and software used in this and future classes.
  4. Wrap it up.

Requirements

Signed copy of the hardware and equipment use policy by legal guardian.

Goal 1

As a class, we will go over what everyone thinks of as a "game," discuss how games have evolved over time and how even the most complex games have roots in the very first known games. Using this information, the students will then begin creating their first game.

Goal 2

Using what we created in the first class, we will spend the class period trying out the games created, learn how to give constructive criticism, and improve the idea. We will also go over basic look and feel ideas, and everyone in the class should have a final picture in their mind of what the game will be and what the final version should look like.

Goal 3

The system we use will include a whole host of software to aid in the creation of games and supporting material. The students should feel comfortable navigating around the interface, as well as using the proper tools for the task.

Goal 4

We will focus on creating the assets for our games, including an instruction guide and box art, and continue to learn the software introduced in the 3rd lesson.

Game Night!

On Friday evening one week after the completion of the class, we will have a chance for everyone in the community to come in and play the games created by our students. The students can attend to explain the game, as well as talk up the benefits of the game to the guests.

Note:

No syllabus is written in stone and the educational services are still in the funding stages. This is meant to serve as a starting point for the classes and as a public record of

Sort:

Is this for homeschoolers and unschoolers?

It will be for anyone that pays for the class. :) I'm working on a complete curriculum for my Digital Art Studio which is in part going to be funded by Allonian Seeds success crosses fingers. We're still looking for funding, but its better to have a plan in place and ready to go if the project sees miraculous growth.

That is interesting. How much will you be charging for the class?

The hope is to get it around 100 USD per student for the course, or 12.50 USD per class. The current thought process is that after this class we would diverge into two paths, one that is about physical things like toys and board games, where the other is about Video game and app development. A student can sign up for both if they want to multi-class with a small discount.

Will be interested to follow progress.
