Badjao Children Swimming For Coins

in #education6 years ago (edited)

Good morning Philippines, a happy day to all Steemians.

I regularly ride a ferry boat in Lapu-lapu City when I go to Cebu City from my hometown. To my big surprise when I saw these children hopping for coins thrown by the passengers.

For a long time now to always visit this port, this is my first time seeing these children whom according to are sons of fellow Muslims in the city. I remembered seeing children who swam for coins when I was still in elementary grade at the port of Toledo City. I can't imagine that the same activity of these children are still practised today.

While people throwing coins happily watch them swimming, I silently ask in mind, do these children go to school? Or they are those deprived to education?

As educator to young adolescents, the scene made me sad anticipating that they never enjoyed their student life. At same age of an educated adolescent, for sure they will be ashamed of what they are doing. Besides, the turbid water is not safe, and even has a foul odor but they just don't mind for a peso or 5. It might be they are not aware of cleanliness, personal hygiene and good grooming.

The lesson I want to convey for this right-up is all about responsible parenting. We as educators are considered second parents yet we have nothing to do if the parents at home don't have the drive to send their children to school. Yes, philosophically some says nobody becomes rich in schooling but try to count the next line,

The best cure for ignorance is education.

Hi @felicitas,

Thank you for this blog of yours which shares about the life of Badjaos, indeed it's a bit saddening to see them having their live being spent near in ports, that made a trademark for them. Hopefully, the Filipino people and the government can find a long term solution to this one, for they are a gem to our history, they belong to the indigenous people.

With that, we're grateful we have chosen this blog to be featured and upvoted by @onerace to empower impactful Philippines' Culture and Tradition blogs.
