A CHILD'S FUTURE IS WORTH EVERY SACRIFICE

Today was the start of the In-Service Training of the university. All teachers of the Senior High School Department are required to attend to the opening day of the two-weeks scheduled training.

The topic is about "GENERALLY ACCEPTED PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR LOCAL EDUCATION SUPPORT SYSTEMS : AN INITIATIVE OF THE ANNENBERG INSTITUTE FOR SCHOOL REFORM AT BROWN UNIVERSITY" Source

These guiding principles are both for teachers and learners to ensure learning in the classroom and possible beyond. Our speaker had shared with us 7 common principles as stated below, with my two cents' of each principle.

I. ALL CHILDREN LEARN.

In whatever aspect of the lesson it is children always learn. We can’t expect all to be on the same page but for sure they are learning. We need to know that each of them learns on their own way. As my previous articles on the series of K to 12 I had reiterated there that teachers and students should know what type of learners they are so as to easily address the ways of what strategies that effective for students to learn fast.

II. ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN TO MUCH HIGHER STANDARDS THAN THEY ARE NOW COMMONLY HELD TO, REGARDLESSS OF THEIR RACE OR ETHNICITY, FAMILY INCOME, GENDER, PRIMARY LANGUAGE, OR DISABILITY.

When children are allowed to explore they learn more than what is offered within the bounds of their classroom. They are capable of learning more what their teacher feed them as long as they are given the avenue to learn more. This is when the 21st century teaching comes in. When learning is doing, you let students perform task, apply theories and follow processes. They become more active and more participative on such scenario of learning.

III. LEARNING IS A COMPLEX PROCESS INTERRELATED WITH ASPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING COGNITIVE, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Students should be taught holistically. Knowledge is expected to be taught to students but together with it comes social learning and emotional development. You teach a student how to build a robot but you also have to instil in them that it’s more fun creating the robot with others and respecting others work as well.

IV. ALL CHILDREN DO NOT LEARN IN THE SAME WAYS OR AT THE SAME PACE.

Students approach their lessons different ways. There are those students who would like to go to the process of learning first the theories then followed by application. There are those who like to learn on directly doing the application. There are those who wish to learn more by doing additional research but there are some who suffice with what is given to them. Some wants to learn as to when they will completely learn everything while others would like to finish it fast. We all have different students and we need to respect each and every single one of them.

V. LEARNING IS ACTIVE. IT REQUIRES EFFORT AND RESILLIENCE ON THE PART OF THE STUDENT AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH TEACHERS, TEXTS, MATERIALS, AND/OR OTHER LEARNERS.

Do not let your students sit down the whole period and you do the talking. You will end the day losing your voice. Let them use their imagination and creativity. Come up with strategies that would enable them to roam around the room or interact with their classmates. Let them learn at some time some of your lesson their own way. As a teacher be the scaffold while they discover what you want them to learn for the day with of course the help of the resources available for the objective of the day. Don’t spoon feed everything to them, they will end up bored and restless.

VI. LEARNING DEPENDS ON THE FOUNDATION OF FACTUAL KNOWLEDGE, THE UNDERSTANDING OF CONCEPTS IN CONTEXT, AND THE ORGANIZATION OF FACTS AND CONCEPTS SO THAT THEY CAN BE RETRIEVED AND APPLIED.

Theories is still part of the learning process. Nothing is applied if there is no theories to anchor the application. Give the students the foundation of the theories they need and let them digest it to its core so it would be easy for them to retrieve when application time comes.

VII. LEARNING IS NOT LIMITED TO SCHOOL IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE.

I had written in my article just yesterday, entitled : “EDUCATION IS A WEAPON TO EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF LIFE” and I quote myself with the emphasis on the last sentence :

As the students had evolved from generation to generation, the actual approach to education had changed. When theories were everything then, the recent approach now is that actual application is more given attention and weights more. The cliché of memorizing is now replaced of familiarization, performing steps and demonstrating process. These enable education to become not only about learning theories but application of it. We should not taught children that trains run on railways, it should be how trains run on railways.

Education should be a weapon to explore the wonders of life so as to prepare the students of the real deal of what we call the work life outside the 4 corners of their classroom.
