Blaming Failure in English Language Examination on Indigenous Language Proficiency

in #education6 years ago (edited)

English language as official language in Western part of Africa has come to stay. Its impact can be felt in every corner of ways of life in the side.

This mandates it for government to enforce learning of the foreign language in schools in which Nigerian and Ghanaian schools are not exception.

In the societies of today, anyone who can't speak or write in English language will be considered to be an illiterate and uncivilized. No recognition maybe shown unto the person.

Moreover, no recognizable and standard institution of learning will grant admission to any student who has not fulfilled having minimum of credit pass in English language as a subject into any academic program.

This has gone far in telling us why students need to study hard so as to pass well in all their subjects including English language.

Nevertheless, it has been noted that some students who fail in English language do blame their failure in the subject on their various indigenous languages, especially when they do well in the indigenous language subject.

Any student who may have found himself in this category has to read this to the end.

For someone to fail English language examination may not have anything to do with one's proficiency in the mother tongue.

I have seen some students who are excellent in speaking English language but poor in speaking their mother tongue, still they can't write what they are pronouncing in English down into paper correctly.

While we see some people who can't speak the language fluently but they are sound in writing. Probably they are not used to it.

If you say you won't speak your dialect again so that you can pass English language, it may not help you at all, especially if your location is where they don't speak English frequently.

Speaking English to someone in your village who rarely speaks the language may be useless. What will be your benefit when you speak English to an okra or meat seller who doesn't know what you're saying, and you continue dramatizing, using gestures to let her understand you, just because you don't want to speak your indigenous language?

Is that not just a waste of time and energy?

You only get the benefit when speaking with someone who speaks the language better than you do. Or with your age mates who are educated like you.

You also stand chance to learn more from English language when you read a English language teaching text.

That is a step!

Another step is to put what you just learnt into practice so that you won't forget.

Obviously, the best place to put this into practice is when you're in your school environment, in class or amidst your fellow students, friends or mates, teachers and so on.

That is why your school administrators demand you to speak English while in school and amidst your mates. They strongly believe that you must have learnt a new thing under your teachers' tutelage or from your personal reading. So, the best time to practice it, is when you are in school.

Therefore, the best approach to be used to pass English language is not to stop speaking your indigenous language while at home.

The desire result may come through constant reading, listening in classes, group reading with your mates, seeking knowledge from teachers, put into practice what you learnt in rightful ways and places, obeying school rules and regulations.

Lastly, learn how to do the right thing at the right time. Do away from procrastination of reading time.
