I am one of those industrious types that always has some sort of projects on the go, from DIY furniture to knitting and crafting, my fingers are always busy with something. One of my most rewarding and fun challenges to date however has been my Note from Around the World project. This was a fun activity that I hope my son will cherish as he gets older - I hope he appreciates the novelty and “cool factor” behind it.

What Is: Notes From Around The World?

This is a fun project where you trade notes with people around the world. You collect your notes and then you can use them for all sorts of ideas. You can use them to show someone how much you love them or you could use them to learn more about the world and where countries and cities are situated (this would make an awesome school project).

Here’s how it works:

1. You type or write out a note for a loved one that reads similar to the following (you can customize it to your own requirements): “Noah, mommy and daddy’s love for you is so strong, it has reached (name of country)”. 
2. Then you source someone from that country to take a photo of your note with scenery or a special monument in their location. LUCKILY there are numerous groups on social media platforms that you can join that are solely about trading notes. 
3. So, you request a trade from a member, they send you their note and you send them yours, you each take a photo of the notes in the country you reside in and then trade once done. The photos I have included will give you a better idea of how the project works.
4. I am used the pictures I collected to compile a mini travel encyclopaedia for my son, with facts about the countries and places found in the photos. I thought this was such a fun way for him to 1. know that we love him very much and 2. a personalized way for him to discover and learn about the world that I hope he will get to travel himself in future.

Make This A School Project

Educators could do a similar project with the kids in their class, to help them connect with the world and to learn about different countries at the same time!

Students could encourage whoever is taking the photo to include something traditional to their country in the photo, or snap a famous landmark in the background. These photos can be used in Show and Tell, an essay or a Geography lesson. It is a very productive way to get the children more actively involved in learning about the world, and I think they will have fun doing it too!

You as a teacher or parent could also take matters into your own hands if you prefer, and create a pin board in the classroom with photos you have collected addressed to you, the school or the class you teach.

I truly do think this a way to make learning fun, especially since it brings the world to our doorsteps and we can learn about cultures, landscapes and history while we connect with people from different countries around the world.
