Grisaille in the history of European easels and monumental painting have methods when artists performed thematic figurative and decorative compositions in grisaille technique, and the voluminous objects depicted on the plane were solved using gradations of tones from black to white. Grisaille is the Latin word "grizz", which means gray, and the gray tones in this method predominate, but they can have a large scale gradation. The researcher of the technique of painting old masters Hermann Ernst Berger in his book "History of the development of methods of oil painting" calls grisaille a depiction of a sculptural bulk stone.

Grisaille helps novice artists understand and feel the relationship of tone and volume, without being distracted by the search for suitable colors. The technique of grisaille - most often performed in black and white or brownish white. This is a good way to deal with the tone in painting, when we work with a brush and paint, but without color, we translate the form into a spot, which, in fact, is a pictorial language. The practice of grisaille makes it possible to take a more meaningful approach to painting work, using in it everything that we know about working with tone and adding color to it.

Sometimes, in black and white, the artist can take such precise tonal relations and at the same time reproduce all the nuances in such a way that you fully begin to feel the color of the work and the color of each object. Moreover, grisaille allows you to fantasize, present a picture in your color interpretation.
This is well known to outstanding artists of the past, so at the initial stage of the work on the picturesque thematic works, they conducted the grisaille method.

Currently, art schools and universities offer some painting and drawing tasks for volumetric transfer of nature and a nude model using the grisaille method. Such tasks as a long drawing for several sessions, it is suggested to perform gouache on paper, and first a detailed but not a tonal drawing with a pencil is made, then they start working with the flowers over the grisaille. When working with oil or temperature on canvas or cardboard, first a well-designed drawing is made on paper, then it is transferred to canvas, primed cardboard. These grisail tasks are aimed in detail and methodically, without distraction from color searches, for a full study of the volume relationships of tone; The easiest tone should be subordinated to other tones, so that no one breaks out from the whole gamut as in a good orchestra. In this case, do not fall into black, you need to transfer the air setting environment around the model or still life. You can also make 3-4 basic colors of gray or brown tones, such as a pentogram, to preserve the integrity, tonal system on the canvas or paper, especially if the size of the work is large. But in the basic, pre-folded tones, you need to enter others - gray, black and white directly from the palette, so it's not easy to split the ska, and the picturesqueness is depicted. This tonal harmony is best achieved in grisaille.

The technique of grisaille is used by Pablo Picasso in the picture of Guernica. The name "grisaille" is equally applicable to monochrome paintings painted with oil paint, and to drawings made in watercolors, for example, Chinese ink with or without white; but the name is given mainly to such works of the brush, which are imitations of bas-reliefs or reliefs.
