English Literature: The object in studying Literature: Part 4

What is the object of reading? Have you ever thought? Is it just pleasure searching? Besides pleasures of reading , entering into a new world there is another object in studying literature and that is to know men.

You don’t know man very well,do you? It is always been a duel creatures, outward and inner nature is not the same what so ever . a person can be in different mode according to situation, so we read to learn about man’s nature

To know man, we have to know the man of all ages . In the deeper history of mankinf we find the deeper meaning of life. To know the man of all ages we have to go through the Literature of supreme nature.

Such as when we read the history of anglo-saxons we learn that they were sea-rovers. Pirates, great explorers and eaters. If we don’t read about them how can we learn about them and their nature. But we want to learn more about them, we want to know what they thought of life,of living and dead. What they loved,what they hated,what they feared .

So what is the real object of reading literature. Knowing man is not enough I guess. To know more about man you have to more about yourself. The more you learn about yourself the more you understand the nature,the history of mankind. Without knowing yourself you can not know others.

When we read from Shakespeare we learn about his age, his thought and what people thought of life in his time. Literature is a medium to purify oneself, to justify oneself. It helps us to create a great bond between past and present. It gives us the opportunity to look in to the future to probe deeper in man’s nature . It helps us to know about our heritage, our culture, our pride, our past, present and upcoming future.
