olonia (in Polish About this sound Polska (? · i)), officially called Republic of Poland (in Polish About this sound Rzeczpospolita (? · i) Polska), is a country located in Central Europe and member of the European Union (EU). It has a territorial extension of 312 685 km².5 It borders on the north with the Baltic Sea and the Kaliningrad Oblast, (which belongs to Russia but without connection to it), to the northeast with Lithuania, to the east with Belarus, to the southeast with Ukraine , to the south with the Czech Republic and Slovakia and to the west with Germany. With a population of more than 38.5 million people, Poland is the 34th most populous country in the world, and the sixth most populous in the EU. Poland is a unitary State divided into 16 administrative subdivisions.

The Polish territory comprises in its largest portion to the north part of the great European plain and encompasses the southern mountainous territory of the Sudetenland, the Carpathians and the Santa Cruz mountain range. Its capital and most populous city is Warsaw, the historical capital of Mazovia, although for many Poles, the old capital, Krakow, is more important.

The creation of a Polish nation is often identified with the adoption of Christianity by its monarch Miecislao I in 966, when its territory was similar to that of modern Poland. The Kingdom of Poland was formed in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a long association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin, through which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was erected. The Commonwealth collapsed in 1795, and the Polish territory was divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria. Poland regained its independence after the First World War as the Second Polish Republic, but was occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union at the outbreak of World War II in September 1939. In 1944, a Polish provisional government was formed, which , after a period of conflicts, referendums and elections, resulted in it becoming a satellite state of the Soviet Union, giving way to the Republic of Poland (Rzeczpospolita Polska), was renamed as the People's Republic of Poland (Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa) in 1952. During the revolutions of 1989, the Marxist-Leninist government of Poland was overthrown, and the country adopted a new constitution that is established as a democracy under the name Rzeczpospolita Polska, often referred to as III Rzeczpospolita.
