Why Governments Won't Protect Our Environment.

Not far from us is a little creek with pool which, amazingly, stays wet even in our summer droughts. It's a lovely little oasis with frogs and sometimes tadpoles in the pool. In summer it is the only place that still has some grass growing and I sometimes go there to collect extra grass and weeds for the rabbits, when supplies at home are getting low. What I collect doesn't put a dent in the grass growing there or cause any habitat destruction, but now and again I get that questioning look from a passer by that says, ‘are you supposed to be doing that?'

One day we went down to the creek and down one side a huge swathe of it had been bulldozed to push earth over to a bridged area that had been collapsing. None of the rubbish had been collected up, just scooped up along with the soil and a pile of that was in the tadpole pool. I noticed we could no longer hear the frogs.

An individual or small group who causes environmental damage would likely be fined or possibly imprisoned, depending on the harm caused. Yet when someone with authority does it we either don't question it, or do we fear to question it? Some will even make excuses for it; “Well, it needed to be done,” “It's to expensive to do it in a less harmful way” etc.

Yet these are then the people we continue to turn to in an attempt to protect our environment.

A group was campaigning for signatures to put in place more, or stronger, laws to stop tree felling in areas where endangered species have been found. There are already laws in place, but despite them, deforestation in areas proven to be habitat for endangered animals is still happening. While people are trying to figure out why these laws aren't being upheld, I see a simple answer as to why.

Governments don't do things without it being of benefit to them. Ultimately the benefit comes down to money/power. They are voted into power by the majority vote from the people, so naturally there is a benefit, to a point, in keeping them happy. However, once they are in, those people aren't going to be paying any more in taxes than they already do, so implementing any laws or restrictions needs to benefit and not cost.

So lets analyse the laws for no logging where endangered species are. The benefits of implementing them are pleasing their voters. Further gain can be gotten by fining small companies and individuals that break that law. There is also the chance of adding in the requirement of permits to do any form of land clearing, which can be charged for. All these things create jobs within the government which is good for the economy and further votes. So far, so good.

Then a big, powerful company comes along and wants to clear a protected area of woodland. Of course they are told no, but they have two aces up their sleeve. The first is that they can make it more lucrative for the government to let them do it and secondly they can usually make a threat to pull a project that is bringing a lot of money into the economy and government. Offers that are hard to refuse. So they get what they want.

So if enough signatures are raised for that petition then the chances are that government will happily implement more laws, but it's not going to change what the people want changed. It merely adds more restrictions to small companies and the general populous who aren't the ones causing the damage in the first place.

I feel that their energy would be better spent in figuring out which companies are destroying these habitats and making people aware of it so that they can choose not to support those companies. Name and shame if you like.

Governments and authorities were originally put in place to represent us and help organise things that the people wanted implementing. I wonder if we've lost sight of that and handed over all our power to them, then wonder why they no longer seem to be representing us. They are not all omnipotent beings, they are people, just like us. If we want things done we are quite capable of doing them ourselves, but seem to prefer to try and hand it over. Is it because it's too much effort? Is it because we feel change doesn't happen quickly enough unless a law is put in place to force it?

Because people are taught to respect authority in every facet of life, and they think everyone does so. The problem is, those with authority respect no one.
It's like religion: people who actually like what Jesus had to say and do their best to be kind and give to the poor; but the preachers with jets cardinals with mansions certainly don't believe a word of anything that they talk about on Sundays, as evidenced by their lifestyle.

And we can't hold these individuals personally responsible because they hide behind corporations.
Everyone knows big business and politicians are in bed together, but so few are willing to seriously reconsider our need for politicians.
Do they believe that the group of people enabling big business are somehow also limiting big business?

Cognitive dissonance does wonders to put things back in order.

Sadly it always seems to come down to dollar signs. Have you seen the golf course that has been approved at Kangaroo Island? They're going to rip up dunes and old farm land to build it. They initially planned on destroying a lot more land, but thankfully were stopped from doing so due to public outcry from locals. It will be interesting to see if they maintain their promises and protect some of the land, or just threaten to pull out of the project altogether and get their own way.

Chevron wants to drill the Great Australian Bight, an ecosystem with so many southern whales and other animals. It's important that we remember our collective voices do have an impact and that the this is the brilliant power of democracy.

Does KI even have that much use for a golf course?! I didn't think that was why people visited.

I sincerely hope they stop the drilling in the bight. Lately, though, they just seem to be getting more underhand. Keep it quiet and then when it's too late...

Did you hear about the nuclear waste storage plans for the North? It was overwhelmingly voted against, but they're going to carry on trying to convince people. I suspect it will more a case of let the attention die down then pick out the supportive ones and say it was accepted by the people.

yeah, i think it is sad that people dont stop and think and use their powers for good once they are in power... i guess cuz the relationship between big business and government is tricky :<

a very thoughtful post...

in general, i think people would like to trust that the people in charge do know what they are doing and that they do things to the benefit of all, and i think due to that eagerness to trust, we hand over a lot of decision making to government people easily?

Wanting power in the first place should probably exclude them from having it. Sadly, the right people for the job wouldn't run for it.

The most improper job of any man, even saints (who at any rate were at least unwilling to take it on), is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity.”

Amen! The government is a hypocrite for sure. I’ve heard of farmers who drove through a ditch (and because there were cattails growing in it, it was considered a wetland) and was fined a large sum of money for doing so. Then within a week, the government mowed the ditch anyways because the grass was too tall. Talk about a money grab! Man, if we could just go to a barter system, what would they do if we had no money to pay them?

Somehow, I'm not surprised.
They certainly wouldn't like us returning to a barter system!

Laws, rules, regulations, and treaties, only apply when the government want them to apply, and they never apply to the government. Whose fault is it? Could it be in America, at any rate, that we are just too lazy to hold our elected official responsible? I think so. When hypocrisy of the voting record is revealed people justify it with well they received further information. I myself see it as okay let's vote this way this time that way we win no matter what. If Americans do not wake up to the hypocrisy of their elected officials we are going to end up on the same road that ran Venezuela off the cliff at breakneck speeds.

Argentina, Greece, Venezuela... countries seem to be dropping like flies. I often wonder how long before we do join them.

Hopefully a little bit longer. Hopefully people will be able to look through the spin and see what has happened.

Think it's because it's infinitely easier to blame someone else for a problem than assume responsibility for attempting to solve a problem?

This is a common issue lately for a lot of the protected environments, due to the fact that the hunger of the politicians for money is bigger than the hunger for the relief they feel in these wild environments. Hopefuly some NGOs will address these mistakes and protect the land. Cause if not, we will soon end up with only concrete around us, a grey world with not wilderness.

we will soon end up with only concrete around us, a grey world with not wilderness.

We certainly seem to be heading that way.
