1.0 Background of the Context

The need for organizational sustainability is always one of the key challenges faced by most organizations in Nigeria and most of the countries around the world at large and in attaining this companies and organization tend to put in measures and counter measures in their operational activities. Also ethical practices is often considered in all organizations. In some cases, this ethical practices tends to be a advantage or disadvantages in sustaining organizations. It should be noted that their are some factors that should be put in place for an organization to be sustained for long. Such includes

• Profitability of the organization
• Government policies
• Organizational system
• Organizational behaviours
• The organization working community

These are many more will be discussed in this piece. A oil producing companies in Nigeria will be consider as the case study of this context

1.1 Statement of the problem

The effect of the activities of oil producing companies post positively and negatively in Nigeria cannot be underestimated in the positive aspect, Corporate Social Responsibility CSR e.g scholarship, renovation of road etc

Now, negative aspect cannot be underestimated or ignored, here we talk about the different forms of pollution caused by these companies.
According to the detailed assessment of pollution.

• Pollution of air caused by the gases emitted into the atmosphere which could be acidic and dangerous to the ecosystem and depleting of the ozone layer.

• Pollution of Water which mostly caused by oil spillages of the said companies leading to death of aquatic organism such as Fish, crocodiles etc... mainly causing hunger and unemployment to most people in such environment.

• Land Pollution among others. It also very great detriment which is caused by oil spillage produced by the companies.

• According to United Nation environment Program UNEP* reported during 2011 analyses carried out. Oil companies contaminated about 1000 square metres areas of Ogoni land and this made the land unproductive and inhabitable until date.

So the problem is on how ethical practices could be use in sustaining these organizations.

Ethics is said to come from Greek work Ethos which connotes consumes, character, or moral value or behaviour that accepted everywhere.

In (2009)Solomon Stated that Ethics basically concerned.

• Character of an individual which includes all of entails to be a good person
• Social rules and activities that limit and governs our activities in knowing what is wrong and Wright. And this is also know as morality

Deahardins 2009 viewed ethics as

Concept of morals: the ability to choose between wright and wrong, good and bad, acceptable and unacceptable.

Practice can be said according to Marriam webester dictionary as

to do or perform often, customarily, or habitually.

To link the two words, Ethics and practice meaning Ethical practice which mean doing what is generally acceptable. And in businesses, ethical decisions are made based on:

• How customers can be satisfied
• How fulfilled the employee will get to be
• How communities are served

Different dimensions of ethical practices includes;

• justice practices or fairness and

These are fetched from two key words which Organization and sustain

Marriam Webster dictionary sees organization as

an administrative and the functional structure e.g business, companies, government, enterprises and political party.

Sustain

this is conserving or preserving a resource so that such a resource is not depleted or permanently damaged or spoilt Marriam Webster dictionary

In merging the two word together, Organizational sustainability can be said to mean putting in certain measures in other to conserve or preserve certain resources which could include finance, labour and even the environment in which the organization exist from been destroyed or damaged.

The topic been treated here can be said to mean all the good acceptable measures which could be put in place from preventing certain organizational resources from being destroy.

In relating the terms or the topic with oil producing companies in Nigeria, the following steps should be considered during the practice of these companies in other to reduce the detriment or disasters in the country.

• Good monitoring by the companies during the construction of their pipelines
• Use of effective and fast equipment in monitoring oil spillage along their pipelines
• Sensitization should be carried out among the members of the community on the disasters that could be caused or adverse effects of destroying the oil pipelines on their environment
• Quick action should be taken towards the oil spillages when noticed
• Gases given out in these oil companies should be well manage or converted to avoid air pollution
• Government policies should be put in place in supervision and monitoring of these oil companies in Nigeria

The effects of oil companies activities on our environment Nigeria as a case study cannot be overemphasized but with good ethical practices, these adverse effects can be well managed and we all can save our environment from been polluted.
