My Tips for I.T. Beginners #3

in #esteem5 years ago

Tip #1

Avoid making noise that will be noticed by your boss or else you might get yelled at.

Tip #2

If your boss noticed something and he wants it to be fixed do not tell him this: Sorry boss, but it's not my job, rather, tell him this: Okay boss, I'll talk to John so that he can fix it (You can tell this to your boss if the job needs to be done by John).

Tip #3

If your boss's son is also a high-ranking official of the company that you are working for never undermine their status because in their mind they are considered as the owner of the company.

For example, if he (the son) wants you to do something that you thought it needs to be approved by your boss (his father) do not tell the him this: Okay boss I'll have to tell boss (his father) first.

It might make their blood boil. Just say yes and do it right away, the son will handle the rest with your boss (the father).

If you are scolded by the father just tell him that you are instructed by his son to do it.

If it happens again do not be afraid to tell the son that you have been scolded by his father when you did his previous order without his father's consent just to make things clear.

Don't worry the son will know your situation by then and the situation will handle itself if not by the son.

Tip #4

Beware, some users will blame your latest actions as a reason on a hanging computer

Last week, when I visited our sister company in another location, I needed to re-arrange the power cables that are plugged-in in a power extension to avoid confusion when it is time to unplug them.

One week later it came to my knowledge that an employee told her manager that their server is now hanging because of the re-arrangement that I made.

A non-I.T. would think that way because they do not understood how technologies works in a particular way so be careful on dealing with the kind of situation that I mentioned.

First and foremost, do not lose your cool because the person blamed you for their server slowdown. They just don't know what they are saying.

The best way to handle it is to call the person that is experiencing the said slowdown in a mild manner, do not pick fight with them just because they blamed you.

Tip #5

If your company is accustomed to projects such as building and renovating an office without taking into account the details on where to put power outlets and internet port, you'll going to have a hard time finishing your part of the project since most of the time an unaccounted project will not be used as designed (computers will not end up on places as planned).
