If you are starting a business and the business that you want to start needs a computer there are free software that you can use and save significant amount of money in return.

You probably be using a Windows computer that cost about $160 while reading this article. But do you know that there's a free alternative to Windows?

Enter Linux, Linux is as old as Windows and is available for free. There are a lot of flavors of Linux available for download and one of the most popular is Ubuntu Linux.

Now that you got a Windows alternative what about a office suite? When it comes to office suite the dominant player is Microsoft Office.

Like Windows, Microsoft Office also does have free alternatives. You can choose to use OpenOffice, LibreOffice or WPS office. Using those free alternatives will save you about $200.

Linux has gone a long way in terms of being a user-friendly alternative to Windows. Ubuntu for example has earned lots of followers in the last few years.

Don't worry your favorite browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox also works flawlessly with Linux.

What about printing? Most printers today also come with a Linux driver so you don't have to worry about it.

So as with WPS office, it is fully compatible with Microsoft Office so you don't have to worry about compatibility issue.

In our office a combination of Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, and WPS office are being used. Users really don't have an issue in using OpenOffice and WPS since the learning curve in using them is very small.

We've been using OpenOffice and WPS office alongside Microsoft Office for about 6 years now and our I.T. department does not have a plan to not use OpenOffice and WPS office because they are FREE.
