Better Be Safe Than Sorry

in #esteem6 years ago

I opened up my family's cafe business as usual tonight, but around 9.00pm, suddenly there's a blackout. Everything became dark, but I looked around and realized that the nearby surrounding buildings are not affected. It must be the circuit breaker I thought as I scrambled to turn on the torchlight on my phone and went to check it.

The circuit breaker was just behind of the kitchen's main door, and as I have suspected, the circuit breaker tripped. I turned it on and the power came back. But after a few minutes, suddenly the CB tripped again. I was worried, as an electrical engineer, I knew that something must have short circuited the wiring systems. I suspected cabling or maybe the kitchen appliances must have been faulty. So, I checked the circuitry one by one until I found the source of the problem. I was right, my freezer box is the main culprit, but I was really surprised to see what makes it faulty.

The original power cable was too short to reach the power socket outlet, so someone has decided to lengthen it by using the wrong and risky method. He or she used another extra length of cable, joint it together by twisting the bare end of each cables and then used a MASKING TAPE to secure it, instead of using an ELECTRICAL TAPE. This is a very dangerous and unsafe method to joint an electrical cable. No wonder theres a short circuit, the masking tape can easily be condensed by water vapor.

I didn't know that the cable has been tempered with, and I was lucky to be able to identify the problem as quick as possible. It could have been worst. If the circuit breaker didn't shut down when the short circuit happened, the cable could have caught on fire. I can't imagine what would have happened to the cafe.

So, my friends, please check the cable cords of each of your electrical equipments and appliances at home or at your office. Make sure all the cables are in good condition. And the most important thing is, always make an effort to test the circuit breaker at least once a month to make sure that it works. A faulty circuit breaker spells danger to premises and the lives of the people residing in it.

I was first introduced to Steemit in December 2017, but I was only active blogging in January 2018. Since then, I've been writing almost everyday. There is no specific title that I blog about, I write almost all types of topics that came across my mind or things that interest me. Now, Steemit is part and partial of my life. Through Steemit I began to learn new things and meet strangers that now I called friends. It's an enjoyable journey so far, and hopefully Steemit will be an enjoyable experience for you too.

I am glad you were able to find the problem and you fixed the power cord so you won't have problems in the future. Good advice to check the circuit breakers regularly. 👍

Yes, it was fortunate that I was able to find the problem early. Some people will get panic and don't know what to do. All that they can do is wait till the electrician come and solved it for them. I guess it is better if people are being educated about some basic things about electricity.
