Dinner and a show: Darius Rucker

in #esteem6 years ago

My brother in law doesn't particularly care for country music. He does like Darius Rucker though, so when we saw he was going to be touring close to us, we decided to go.

My wife thought it would be fun to make it a family event. In the end only her parents, sister, and brother in law were able to go with us.

Typically, when my wife and I go to an outdoor show at this venue, we usually cheap-out and get lawn seats. In this case because her parents were coming, we figured we should get actual seats.

We ended up in the grandstand section and the seats were pretty good! Before I get to that though, I should probably talk about dinner.

One of our favorite places to eat near the venue is a brewery called Mountain Town Station. It is in a cool building that used to be a train depot I think.

It is hard a lot of times to remember that I am now a blogger. Usually when I go out to eat I forget to get a picture of the front of the establishment and just get pictures of my food.

In this case I got a nice picture of the outside, but I got zero pictures of our food. We were too busy enjoying our time together and talking. I did get a couple shots inside the establishment though.

These are a couple of their beers that they brew in-house. The one on the left is the Gambler's Golden Ale. The one on the right is the Railyard Raspberry that my wife got. It is usually her go-to beer when we come here.

I was sad that we were there a little too early for them to have tapped the Octoberfest kegs yet. My brother in law got the sampler flight that he sent me a picture of, but I don't have access to it now. The others enjoyed a nice Belgium Wit that they brew.

We got a blooming onion as an appetizer and then my wife and I shared a chicken parmesean sandwich. Most everyone else got burgers except my brother in law. He got the bbq brisket nachos which are one of my favorites here. My wife took this picture of the area where they brew the beer. I like the old bottles they have on ledge from various brands of beer. The Yuengling (Americas oldest brewery) porter on the right is my favorite bottle.

We got our check and quickly settled up because we didn't want to miss the show. We drove the short distance back to the casino where the show was and found a parking spot.

There were actually more performers than just Darius Rucker, but he was the one we were most interested in. Russel Dickerson was finished playing already by the time we made it through security and the ticket area.

Being so close to where we live, my wife and I ran into quite a few people that we knew from work. We wove our way through the crowd and made our way to our seats.

We got to our section and sat down just in time for Darius Rucker to take the stage. He started the show with his hit "Homegrown Honey" and everyone was moving to the beat.

Even during his slower songs the crowd was engaged, dancing and singing along. He also played two of his most famous songs from his time with Hootie and the Blowfish. He always claims that "Let Her Cry" is the first country song he ever wrote even though it was a hit on mainstream radio and not country.

Towards the end of his set, it started raining and I got some cool shots of the rain coming down agains the stage lights. We were keeping our eye on the sky because they had been calling for some bad weather all day.

He finished the set with his cover of "Wagon Wheel" the Old Crow Medicine Show song he made famous. Fun fact: Bob Dylan actually started the rough concept for that song and OCMS later picked it up and finished it with complete lyrics and music. If you have never heard their version and you aren't adverse to bluegrass music you should check it out.

After his set the next band scheduled for the night was Lady Antabellum. My wife, her sister and I had already seen them in concert and the others with us didn't really care about them.

We were leaning towards leaving when the lightning started and a man took the stage telling us we had to take cover because there was some bad weather coming in. The folks in the grandstand area(where we were) had to move completely because they were made of metal.

That pretty much made our decision easy, we headed back to the car and made our way home. It was a great night with our family and I have a feeling our brother in law will remember this show for a long time.

This was my second time seeing Darius Rucker and I have to admit he puts on quite a show. It may not have the pyrotechnics or fancy sets like some other bands do, but it is just a good old fashioned good time with some good music.

I highly recommend going to see him if you ever get the chance!

Looks like a fun time!

Thanks! It was!

what a great day you had and it's good you didn't take photos of food!! that means the food and company was way too much to even think of taking photo's :D

Indeed, it was very tasty! I need to be more dilligent though... Posts won't write themselves.

I don't listen to much country but I do love the name "Darius Rucker". My friends and I use it quite a bit, and I've wanted to use it in my fiction writing before remembering that it was actually a real name though haha. I just had my very first Yuengling(had to copy and paste because I don't know if I'll ever be able to spell it) a few weeks ago when a friend from PA came to visit and brought a bunch in his car. Glad y'all had a fun time!

Thanks! Yeah, it is a pretty cool and unique name. Kind of like Rusty Shackleford (extra points if you get the reference). Yuengling is awesome, I always grab some when I got to Ohio to visit my in-laws.

Isn't that Dale's alias in KOTH? Or am I way off? It took me a minute. Have you ever had the golden pilsner? Same friend brought up some of those on that recent trip up here and I had never had/seen them before. My review- not bad considering they had been sitting in a car for weeks and were warm as warm gets

You are correct! I haven't tried that yet. I usually just buy the regular lager or sometimes the light if I want something a little less heavy. I really dig the black and tan though. It is a great beer for Winter. My brother in law told me that they make an Octoberfest too. I'd love to try that. I will have to keep an eye out for the golden pils though.

I can't believe I pulled that out of the memory bank. Even when I remembered, I wasn't sure if I was right. I used to be obsessed with KOTH, but it's been awhile. Jesus, a lot of options. Up here I've only seen the classic. But I'll have to have my friend bring up some of their other stuff!

I'm not a big fan of country music, but I did see Darius Rucker a few good years ago.

I like it best when he sticks to the Hootie & the Blowfish tunes ;)

Yeah, the crowd went pretty bonkers when they busted in to "Only Wanna Be With You" from a banjo riff.

What a cool family night. That just sounds like so much fun.

It really says something about you and your family that instead of being big bummed by the weather you had fun with the early part and didn't regret the latter part.

I really understand no pictures of the food. I can't tell you how many times I've torn into a great meal and about 2/3 finished I remember that I'm going to write about it. More than not, for a fact.

Yeah, I have so many missed opportunity posts that I could probably put together. That could be a whole post in itself. Pictures from here and there... It was a good time. When they were deciding whether to leave or not I told them to look at the ticket price and ask themselves if they thought it was worth it just to see the one act. If they did then no problem!

Beer good food and family sound slike a great night throw in a concert and its even better i havent heard of Darius but off to check him out ow

He is pretty good. When he was with Hootie and the Blowfish they were more pop/rock. His new solo thing is country, but I would consider it fringe country. More crossover pop than anything else. It is still good stuff though.

Yes Listening to one of his albums now and I am not a huge country fan but i like his stuff

I wondered why his name was familiar maybe from Hootie and the Blowfish, we have a friend here inthe music scene who played backing for them for a few years

That is very cool! Glad you are enjoying listening to it!

I am adding a few to y walking playlist :)
