My Own Lyrics Challenge 1986 - Walk This Way - Joe Perry & Steven Tyler

The lyrics of the song “Walk This Way” tell of the sexual awakening of a young man in high school in the 1970’s. He is very innocent and is helped in his journey by others who have more experience. This is a coming of age song with quite an explicit message.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1986. “Walk This Way” had already been a big hit for the band Aerosmith when it was first released in the mid 1970’s.

The version for 1986 is by the rap group Run DMC and features Aerosmith who were in a career slump at the time. This song simultaneously brought rap music to the mainstream and revitalized Aeromith who went on to be a huge presence in the 1980’s and beyond.

The video for Walk This Way shows the two band in adjacent recording studios, bothering each other with their loud music. They end up getting together and perform the last half of the song on a stage as friends.

This iconic breakthrough video is now high on many “Top Videos of All Time” lists and still gets heavy rotation.
