Mixed feelings about steemmonsters! And a decision!

in #esteem5 years ago (edited)

Steem detective is a great tool and I am glad that somebody mentioned this to me. This finally gives me an easy way to get a clear picture of my investments in the steem blockchain!

I know that Steemmonsters is costing me Steem. No doubt about it. But it was time to get some actual and detailed information!

Mixed feelings

I am started to have mixed feeling about steemmonster. I do think that the first hype is over. Prices on the market for cards are dropping! I am getting a shit load of Vampires, Rusty Andriods and Highland Archers. I can't even sell those anymore for $0.01 on the market!
My daily quest yesterday was a nightmare! I started in my quest in Diamond III. It took me 29 battles to win 5 with the Fire splinter. I do know that the fire splinter isn't my best summoner in my deck, but still it is pretty decent!
I also noticed that I am player more and more against the same players! Which also indicates that less and less people are active!

The hard facts and figures!

The Steemmonster discord channel bot, learns me that I have bought 71 Booster packs.
I also bought lot's of cards, trying to improve my collections!

I know that this all was voluntarily! Let me put this clear. I was my decision and only my decision!

To be honest the amount of Steem which I did spend on it, was much higher than I expected. I just invested a complete minnow in the game! In return I did have lot's of fun!

Guess I better not do a ROI calcultation. And it could have been much worse. Yesterday I dropped the price of my Gold Foil Sacred Unicorn with some much that it finally got sold for a little bit more than 130 steem.
So, I did have a netto investment of 12.72 SBD and 390.231 Steem.

But we also have to see how much my collection is worth according to the market!

This total value represents 552 steem. Which means that if I would be able to sell all my cards I would have a positive investment. But with the situation on the market, nobody is buing lot's of cards anymore I doubt that I would get 552 steem for it!

I don't mind having done this investment. But sometimes one have to take some decision. Sometimes these decision can be hard, sometimes good and sometimes though to take!
Yesterday during my daily quest I did bit the bullet. I am done with investing in Steemmonsters.
I will still play my daily quest but not as frantic as before. I won't try to chase the higher leagues anymore because that only gives me a lot of frustration!

Are you still enjoying the battles. Or do you also have mixed feelings?
Really would like to hear what others do think about this!

Cheers,
Peter

I have been going back and forth with SteemMonsters for my son...
Hmmmmm
Today I read so many posts on the DrugWars game...
Of course I would get Worst Mother award if I got my son on it... hahaha
Thank you for sharing this with us and sorry that it's not turning out as expected....

Nothing to be sorry about. The game has lot's of potential. There are just not enough users to keep the business model and market sustainable.
Like I wrote I did enjoy most of my time on Steemmonsters. Only I will stop with buying cards and booster packs. And will sell all my rewards.
This is no point for me to keep investing into it. I did and tried to climb the rankings but I failed.
So you have to take a loss when needed. And this is the moment.

Thanks for the comment,
Peter
I won't show drugswars also not to my sons :)

Cool
You win some you lose some I guess :)

after buying 110+ packs, I can't even make it back to diamond 2, where I hit the last two seasons... now I am stuck in gold 1. I too am questioning where it goes from here, or if after its played longer, Silver/Gold is where $250 is expected to get you.

There are just not enough players to keep the business model and the market sustainable!
That’s my 2 cents!
I will still play but sell most of my rewards.

Problem.is that reward cards don't sell unlesd you are one of the lucky ones that has other reward cards than 300 sea genies androids, vampires and Highland archers.
I can't even get rid of all.my GF sea genies...

I do know that problem :)
Guess you will have to start a second line and build a new Vampire, Android or highland there. Maybe then even create a secondary account. Move all the cards which are obsolete to there and try to get some more rewards.
Too much work for me :) but it could work.

I've been doing that. But I'm trying to lower the amount of time I spend playing SM, not increase it;lol
A couple of weeks ago I didn't even have time to write posts because I was always playing. I managed to balance that out a little more... Still, I could use some more free time. But selling one of the accounts, r combining them into a higher level means getting fewer reward cards again....

It is like a 2 side cutting knife :)
I will only focus on the daily rewards. Will upgrade all my monster which aren't at the max of the summoners yet.
I do have 2 summoners on L5 all the rest is at L4. So, if I get a card which is already at it's max for the summoner than it will go to the market! I can always invest the money back in Durgwars :)

steemmonsters is a business, its in it to make money, that means someone else has to willingly hand money over. I never got into steemmonsters but I am sure there are many more in the same boat as you. Lets see now drugwars is out will steemmonsters drop in activity

I am sure that this will happen. Maybe most of us will make a loss there also, but at least you have a chance of getting some free steem.
Magic-dice is also making some people rich. Both the ones who did top the last 2 weeks Level 1 in the minnow rising, are profiting from it.
It is good to see more and more dapps coming to the blockchain, we just need to do a proper investigation before you step into it! Or at least do it with a calculated risk. Then who will be richer for sure are the dapps creators. Which I don't mind to be honest. It is a business and it should be managed like a business!

They really need to fix up the market situation... the over supply glut is terrible. I made a suggestion of an ability to card burn (for 0.01USD return), this would help reduce the sell walls at 0.02 USD... and hopefully reduce the circulating supply! I'm still finding the game okay.. but I'm only in the lower tier of Gold and not aiming seriously at any higher...

I was hoping to get into diamond but gave up the fight. I did have a short stay in Diamond III and with short I mean really short :)

We are SO proud to have you as a member of our

The nature of how this game is played does not facilitate a healthy market. Almost every card is either completely worthless (Vampire), And if it isn't, then its worth keeping and leveling up. This is of course my opinion just based on my observations of playing the short time that I have. Because of the fact that "like" cards must be combined means that everyone is holding on to the cards which have been realized as useful and dumping cards which don't fill any niche. Also, unless some sort of scarcity is introduced to the already existing cards, the price of everything will always slowly drop down. Maybe once a next "series" of cards is released, the current selection of cards will become unavailable outside of the marketplace.

I'm so glad to see your comment here @bxlphabet. This post and all the comments on it really deserve close study. Look at the kind of money being talked about to end up unhappy!

I think you should stick with your plan of f2p and keep blogging the results day after day. The monsters daily upvote on your post will cover the cost of the starter pack and then some over time.

I had NO IDEA of the kind of money this would take when we were talking earlier.

This post is a big wow! for me. I'm in steem to earn a living, not give steem money lol. I will take my 0.02 from the drug game over this very happily.

I did like the old reward system more, where you got booster packs. I do understand that they changed this, the only way to really grow is to invest into booster packs. But if we take a look at stateofthedapps, we do see a negative line for Steemmonsters!
Thanks for the comment.

I feel you about the investment part, this is one of the reasons that also sent me to Steem Monsters but now it's more of a fun part of the Steem network for me were I don't have to worry and I can just have fun.

That will be my mind set from now on too!
Thanks for the comment.

Sounds like I really missed the hype period and should not be investing in @steemmonsters now. Thanks for sharing your story Peter!

Your welcome Erik. You can still invest if you like to play the game. No problems with that, but don't expect any positive ROI.

I passed on this one because games where you need to find rare cards are impossible to win from an investors point of view. It is like investing in the lottery. I am sure there are ways to game the system but they usually involve borderline shady activity or a lot of low paid work.

It for sure it. I never invested into the game to make a profit out of it but to climb the ranks. I do see now that there is no use for any further investments. I will just enjoy the daily battles and work from there!

I have the same doubts as you have. I don't believe in the sustainability of the game anymore. They have made it so hard for beginners to grow their deck without investing a truckload of money, there is only a small instream of new people. Without new blood, the game has no future.
I heard from Matt himself that they are aiming for investors, which I do get, as business is business.

But every change they make is beneficial for the top players only. Yesterday there was ydt another conversation about giving more incentives to the big players.

Not only is this entire idea the complete opposite of evdrything I stand for, I also think they have been giving a lot of people false hope.
Maybe it started out as something that was both for the fun and for the money (especially for Matt, i hear). But somewhere along the way it became all about the money.

I'veen going back and forth about selling everything but my main deck. I simply can not decide. I feel more betrayed every day again.

The rewards cards this season are definitely distributed in a different way than last season. I have been ralking to some others, and none of us got even a single legendary. Heck, I can even count the number of epics on my two hands.

The thing is that I've only just started to learn the rules that are important when lining up your team, and I'm getting better every day.

But I won't be investing anymore, for sure. I've lost all my respect for both founders, and I'm not willing to pay for their fancy cars anymore, so to speak.

The absolute lack of good marketing to the world outside of SteemIt makes that the player base gets smaller instead of larger. I stopped playing my level 1 decks, exept for the one I'm running an experiment with in which I want to proof that once again, people who can't afford toi invest don't stand a single chance to grow their deck, and are being locked out. It feels like steemit's HF20 all over again. Just like STiNC, they don't give a damn about the little guys. All they can see and want is cold, hard cash.

I haven't has time to check out the new Drugwars game, but I have the feeling it will wipe SM off the table.

And although I love to play, I think they deserve to be overpowered by some other game.

Og boy, I'm just going to stop here, because once I get started, I can't stop anymore. There are so many things that are so completely wrong... they've just lost touch with reality.

Maybe I'll finally start selling tomorrow. There's no way that will result in a positive ROI, but I have the feeling it will only get worse....

Thanks for your perspective. A lot of truth in here!
I can understand that they do have to run it as a business. They will have some competition from drugwars for sure.
I do play most of the time against the same players which was an eye opener. That's why I decided to sell my gold foil unicorn way to cheap. I just didn't want to risk being stuck with it!
Cheers,
Peter
Ps how is the back?

Sorry for the late reply.
The back is still not OK, but a lot better than a couple of months ago. Thanks for asking.

I put up all my gold foils for sale - mostly commons and rares, nothing really valuable, but it is not easy to sell cards at the moment. So many people are leaving the game.

I still haven't decided on what to do with the rest of it. I've been told to be patient - that once the automated tournaments are out, some things will be improved to make the game more enjoyable for everyone, so I decided to with a little longer before I sell everything. I guess a little hope can't do no harm.... :0)
