The mobile hit game Pokémon Go has now been around for almost 3 years. After the tens and millions of people have signed up to play the game, the game continues quite strong with millions playing as the company continues to add content for those looking for new things to do with their friends in game. However, one of the main choices that the game provides to do early on is the need to select a team when representing Pokémon trainer battles.

In this time, battles have evolved a number of ways from the original gym system. First, the gym system was actually revamped to have a decaying effect in CP and limit space to only six Pokémon instead of the 10 when originally starting. After the first year, Niantic launched raid battles that enabled trainers to come together as a community in battle Pokémon in an effort to catch these new legendary Pokémon. This was highly successful and led to a new growth area for the game. Lastly, this last year the developers launched the new player versus player system in order to allow players to play against each other and enjoy the game in a new environment. While many have enjoyed this feature, I personally have rarely used it due to time constraints and lack of interest. But I think diversity is always good for these games to have given the large community it benefits from.

The three main teams that are available in the game have always had implications and impacts to the way it has been played. For example, you can only place Pokémon in gyms to get rewards if they are of the same team as yours. I know for a fact that this lead to some intense battles amongst the community as they competed to take air control of geographic areas in real life to control the gyms. Also, when battling raid bosses the amount of balls you get to capture the defeated Pokémon increases if your team does the most damage during the battle. So there has always been an advantage of playing with the same team as your friends in the community.

Finally, after all this time Niantic is allowing players to buy a item in their inventory that will allow them to change teams. However, they will only be allowed to change teams once per year after purchasing the item which is called a Medallion. The price of said medallion is currently at 1,000 coins. So it is a pricely decision but one that can be convenient if the players around you are of a different team. I think it is great that they put this option in game although I do not see myself using it; Go Valor!

Thanks!
