Market Friday: monsoon rain finally came and drenched all,มรสุมพาฝนมาแล้ว เปียกกันหมด

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the lovely and compassionate @dswigle. The monsoon rain has arrived in the north-east of Thailand and we all happily got wet. The plants and land are smiling in the rain. Water is so important for daily survival.

I arrived in Nongkhai early in the morning amidst rain clouds and they soon broke out heavily. The river level has risen by five meters due to rain-water flowing down from Laos and China. The colour of water becomes deep reddish brown after traveling down from those far away mountains and jungles in the north.

I had to go to the market and I was soaked wet at seven o’ clock in the morning. I felt sorry for the vendors as customers stayed away and the market was very quiet. As soon as I entered the market, all the lights were switched on making the atmosphere seemed like the evening. Many locals and some tourists were having their breakfast at various food stalls. Each dish costs a minimum of 70 cents, for special ingredients you’ll have to pay about one dollar a piece! People would visit at least two food stalls and buy some take-away snacks or some Thai sweets.

Nongkhai is well known for local Vietnamese food as there was a big flow of Vietnamese refugees settling down here during the arms conflicts there over sixty years ago. These are hard working people with amazing drive for success and wealth. They are fiercely loyal to their tribes and always support each other businesses. Most of the morning food stalls are Vietnamese and Chinese food.

สุดสัปดาห์นี้มรสุมพัดพาฝนมาถึงอีสานแล้ว เรามาถึงหนองคายแต่เช้าท่ามกลางเมฆฝน เราดีใจมากที่ฝนตกตามฤดูกาล ทำให้แม่นํ้าโขงมีระดับสูงขึ้นประมาณห้าเมตร นํ้าไหลแรงและมีสีแดงขุ่น หลายวันก่อนเราคิดว่าจะได้เดินข้ามไปฝั่งลาวได้แน่ๆ ต้นไม้และแผ่นดินมีความสุขมาก เราก็เปียกปอนตอนไปตลาดเช้า ฟ้ามืดตลาดจึงเปิดไฟสว่างไปทั่ว สงสารแม่ค้าที่ลูกค้าหนีฝนหายไปหมด ทำให้ตลาดเงียบแต่ก็ยังมีคนมากินอาหารเช้ากันพอควร

สิ่งที่ทำให้แปลกใจคือ ที่ตลาดนี้มีขนมไทยแบบปิ้งกับใบตอง และขนมหวานไทยสำหรับคนชอบของหวานๆหลายเจ้า ของหวานและของกินเล่นที่นี่อร่อยมากและขายในราคาถูกด้วย มีตั้งแต่ของคนเวียดนาม คนจีนและคนไทย แถมยังมีอาหารว่างแบบฝรั่งเศสด้วย เช่นพวกขนมปัง

โชคดีที่ชีวิตที่นี่ไม่ทันสมัยและสะดวกสบายเหมือนเมืองใหญ่ เข่นที่อุดร ค่าครองชีพก็ถูกกว่าที่อื่นและคุณภาพชีวิตค่อนข้างดีแบบคนสมถะใช้ชีวิตเรียบง่าย อากาศดีไม่มีรถติดยาวๆเป็นหางว่าวเหมือนที่กรุงเทพฯ ตอนนี้ก็มีชาวต่างชาติมาปลูกบ้านอยู่ในตอนแก่หลายคนแล้ว แม้แต่คนไทยที่ไปทำงานต่างประเทศก็กลับมาทำสวนปลูกต้นไม้ที่นี่ ต่อไปในอนาคตที่ไม่แน่นอน เช่นการเกิดสงครามในตะวันออกกลาง คนในเมืองจะต้องลำบากมาก ฝรั่งเขาก็วิเคราะห์แล้วว่าคนจะอดตายเป็นจำนวนมาก เราก็คิดว่าเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงถูกคิดไว้ให้คนไทย มีโอกาสอยู่รอดมากขึ้นในยามวิกฤต
