My old friends’ garden in Nongkhai, ไปเที่ยวบ้านเพื่อนเก่าที่หนองคาย

Last month I had a visitor from Bangkok who was interested in changing her lifestyle to country living. So, I invited her to stay a weekend at my little cottage on Nongkhai. I have some small cottage or ‘kuti’ which is a small hut used by monk for meditation retreat.

But my friend dud not come to Nongkhai to become a nun, so I took her to do some essential sightseeing. In the evening and afternoon, she would be quietly on her own. The idea was to give her some space and quiet time to be with herself in green surrounding with lots of birds and five cats.

At first, she was very afraid of my garden as it does look dark and very quiet at night. I had two lights on along the garden path for reassuring her safety. I was very confident that this place is very safe and well looked after by several angels. Later she told me that she never slept so well like this for ages. She told me that she forgot all about her worries and problems. This was my purpose for getting her out dude Bangkok where her lifestyle was never ending social activities.

I took her to the main temple of Nongkhai (Wat Phochai), the river front promenade and the Indo-China market. Along the way, I took her to see my old friends’ garden. To my surprise, they have now a small cactus garden. In the past they had the best collection of wild orchids in Nongkhai. They were very busy with the builders as they were building some extension for a guesthouse. So, we were left to entertain ourselves. There were only a few wild orchids in blooms as the winter season had been too warm. The sant thing happened to my orchids; very few orchid blossoms this season.

เมื่อปลายเดือนก่อน เรามีเพื่อนอาวุโสกว่ามาเยี่ยมที่หนองคาย จึงต้องเตรียมสถานที่และโปรแกรมให้เพื่อนได้บองใข้ชีวิตแบบคนต่างจังหวัด เรามีกระท่อมที่ปลายสวน ที่เราเรียกว่ากุฏิ ที่พระป่าใช้จำศีลและฝึกสมาธิเงียบๆห่างจากผู้คน ตอนแรกเจากลัวมาก เพราะมีแต่ต้นไม้ครึ้มและดูมืดในเวลากลางคืน เราก็เปิดไฟตามทางเดิน และหน้ากระท่อมหรือกุฏิไว้สองดวง เพื่อให้เขาอุ่นใจ เราบอกเขาว่าที่นีไม่น่ากลัวหรอก ปลอดภัยมากเพระามีเทวดาช่วยคุ้มครองหลายองค์ เขาก็ทำท่าไม่ค่อยแน่ใจ. แต่วันรุ่งขึ้นเขาบอกว่าไม่เคยนอนหลับสบายแบบนี้มานานมากแล้ว นอนกลับง่ายและหลับลึกมาก เขาบอกว่าความกังวลความว้าวุ่นใจหายไปหมดเลย.

เราก็พาเขาไปไหว้พระที่วัดประจำจังหวัด คือวัดโพธิ์ชัย และวัดริมโขงที่มีประวัติมากมายชื่อวัดหายโศก เราไปเดินที่ตลาดอินโดจีนและถ่ายรูปที่ริมแม่น้ำโขงด้วย ให้เพื่อนได้สัมผัสบรรยากาศชีวิตต่างจังหวัดแบบช้าๆบ้าง เราจึงพาไปเยี่ยมเพื่อนเก่าของเราที่มีกล้วยไม้ป่ามากมายหลายชนิด แต่ปีนี้กล้วยไม้ออกดอกน้อยมาก เพราะฤดูหนาวนั้นอากาศอุ่นสบาย แต่เขาเริ่มเล่นกระบองเพชร เราก็พากันถ่ายรูป เพราะเพื่อนกำลังติดงานกับช่างก่อสร้าง เขากำลังจะต่อเติมบ้านให้เป็นห้องเช่าสามห้อง. ที่นั่นทำเลดีเพราะอยู่ริมโขง คงมีคนมาเช่าแน่นอน เราก็ให้เพื่อนได้มีโอกาสอยู่นิ่งๆกับตนเองมากหน่อย และเอากนังสือธรรมะไปให้อ่านเล่นสามเล่ม เขาขอเอากลับไปหนึ่งเล่ม ก่อนกลับเขาบอกว่าสนใจจะซื้อที่สร้างบ้านไว้อยู่ตอนแก่ เราบอกว่าซื้อบ้านจัดสรรจะรวดเร็วสะดวกกว่ามาก แต่เขาอยากสวนไว้ปลูกต้นไม้ด้วย เราคงคอยดูต่อไปว่าเพื่อนไฮโซแบบนี้จะสามารถเปลี่ยนวิถีชีวิตคนเมืองหลวงได้จริงหรือเปล่า
