One Photo Every Day: 277/365, Making merit over the weekend, ไปทำบุญวันสุดสัปดาห์, the OPED project.

Once a year it is Thai custom to make merit for those loved ones who are no longer with us. We believe that the merits or the result of our good deeds would be passed on to them in their spirit world to help them to progress on their journey to a better reincarnation.

I went to the Buddhist temple called Wat Sam Phraya which is situated very close to the Chao Phraya River. It was a very bright and sunny day with strong breezes which made the day much more enjoyable. My old friend's younger brother was ordained at this Wat along time ago, so we all got used to coming here every year for our merit making ceremonies. I was on a private mission as I recently felt that some of my close relatives' spirits needed some support. In the past, I had dreams that brought me to see some old relative' spirit who had not been reborn or reincarnated, including a teenager' spirit in the other dimension of spirits' world; both of whom had been neglected by thier immediate families. I had to phone up those families to ask whether they had forgotten to make merits for their deceased familiy members. They all told me that they had stopped doing the ceremonies because they thought they would be already been reincarnated. I had to yell at them that they were looking very sad and needed some of the merits.

The car park was full of cars belonging to peopie who came to study Buddhist texts, but the main hall was very quiet. I had requested the monk who got ordained at the same time as my friend' s brother, by he continues his monkhood till present day. Most Thai men would be ordained for one month as an ausicious symbolic rite for their parents' sake. It is customary that a Thai family whose sons have come of age for an ordination, at twenty years old, at least one of the sons should be ordained to make merits for their parents. Usually, the mothers would be crying out of joy at the ordiantion ceremony; it is like the feeling of relief that their souls would never go the hell and their death would be peaceful one and their reincarnatin would be to a much better life. The resulting merits from such deed of becoming a monk for the family 's well-being is taken very seriously in Thailand to this day.

This year I offered two sets of monk's robes which should replace the old monk's robes from last year. I decided to order the best quality cotton so that they would last the whole year. This monk is a very poor monk who refuesd to perform ceremonies for lay people which would involve money as part of the offerrings to the monks, So, this monk has no saving account or lots of money; he depends entirely on his family's charity and friends' donation for basic neccessities.

The ceremony started by lighting the candles and incense in front of the Buddha statue. I had to write the names of those to whom I wished to send the resulting merits on a piece of paper. After the monk made a special prayer for the spirits in their world, I then burned that piece of paper in the procelain container next to the set of candles and small golden puja set. Then I would pour the ashes into a bigger container. The monk would recite special prayer in Pali language to specify the direction in which the merits would be traveling to specific receivers. Then I started to pour water onto the ashes while the monk started to recite the prayer on spreading compassion. The last thing to do was for me to pour the water with the ashes onto the base of a big tree in the compound. The mother earth will be carrying the merits to the destination. I felt so much lighter and happier that I had done my part in helping my relatives' spirits in their dimension. While the monk was reciting his prayer, I closed my eyes and happened to see, in black and white, both spirits coming to receive the merits. I wonder why I saw them in black and white!?

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเราได้ไปทำบุญให้กับวิญญาณของญาติที่เสียไปหลายปีแล้ว วันนั้นท้องฟ้าแจ่มใสมากและมีลมพัดให้หายร้อนตลอดบ่าย เราไปที่วัดสามพระยาเพราะสมัยก่อน น้องชายของเพื่อนเคยมาบวชที่นี่ พระองค์นี่เป็นคนที่บวชพร้อมกับน้องชาย แต่ยังคงดำรงความเป็นพระจนทุกวันนี้ พระรูปนี้ค่อนข้างจนและไม่มีเงินเก็บเลย และอยู่ได้เพราะญาติมาช่วยบ้าง เพื่อนและคนที่เห็นชอบในการปฎิบัติของพระก็มาคอยช่วยสนับสนุน พระไม่ไปงานสวดที่ต้องมีเงินเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้อง และไม่ไปงานสวด หรือทำพิธีกรรมที่่ได้เงินใส่ซอง ปีนี้เราถวายผ้าไตรจีวรครบชุดสองชุดทำจากผ้าฝ้ายอย่างดี พระจะได้ใช้ได้ถึงปีหน้า

ปีนี้พระต้องทำพิธีต่างจากปีก่อน เพราะเราขอทำบุญให้ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้วสองคน ที่มาทำให้เราอยู่ดีๆก็นึกทำอยากบุญแผ่ส่วนกุศลให้คนที่ตายไปแล้ว หลายปีก่อนเราฝันว่าถูกนำให้ไปพบกับผู้ใหญ่ที่ตายไปแล้วหลายปี เราสงสารเขามากๆและรุ้เลยว่าทางบ้านไม่มีใครทำบุญกรวดนํ้าไปให้ วันต่อมาเราโทรศัพท์ไปหาครอบครัวของเขา ก็พากันบอกว่าไม่ได้ทำบุญเลยเพราะคิดว่าไปเกิดนานแล้ว เรา โกรธมากเลยตะโกนว่า และบอกให้ฟังว่าสภาพน่ารันทดขนาดไหน และไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมาเราก็ฝันว่าไปเจอวัยรุ่นที่พึ่งเสียไปในอีกมิติหนึ่ง เราก็โทรไปเล่าให้ทางบ้านเขาฟัง เขาก็ตกใจมากว่าเรารู้ว่าเด็กชอบทำอะไรและมีความฝันว่าอยากทำอะไร เขาอึ้งกันไปและเราบอกว่าเขาต้องการความช่วยเหลือเพื่อการก้าวข้ามมิตืนี้ไปให้ได้ เราก็ไล่ให้เขาไปทำบุญกันอีก

เรา ได้ถวายจีวรแล้วก็เผากระดาษที่เขียนชื่อคนที่อยากทำบุญให้ ในโถเซรามิกที่มีเครื่องทองน้อยวางอยู่ด้วย พระสวดมนต์บทพิเศษให้วิญญาณ แล้วเราก็เอาขี้เถ้ามาเทใส่พาน พระสวดมนต์บทกรวดนํ้า เราก็กรวดนํ้า แล้วเอาพานไปเทนํ้าที่โคนต้นไม้ใหญ่ที่ลานวัด ขณะที่ฟังบทสวดแผ่เมตตา เราหลับตาแล้วเห็นสองคนมาในโบสถ์ แต่เห็นเป็นภาพขาวดำ ซึ่งทำให้แปลกใจมากว่า ทำไมต้องเป็นขาวดำ แล้วภาพนั้นก็ค่อยๆเลือนหายไป เหมือนกระดาษที่ถูกเผา เรารู้สึกตัวเบาและสบายใจมากหลังจากทำบุญให้กับผู้ที่ล่วงลับไปแล้วและกำลังต้องการความช่วยเหลือในมิติอื่น
