Unexpected discovery at Arun Temple, Bangkok, พบเห็นสิ่งที่ทำให้ประหลาดใจที่วัดอรุณ

This is my third post on Wat Arun. I just could not let go of the unexpected discovery at War Arun that has deep effect on my mind during my visit.

I had visited Wat Arun a few times in the old days but I never looked up the other parts of the temple beyond the main Pagoda(Prang), and the two small original buildings in the front. During my last visit I tried to explore the new parts built during the reign of King Rama II and Rama III. To my surprise, those constructions added in the new reign are very elaborate and grand comparing with King Taksin’s original construction of the old temple.

The Main Hall or Ordination Hall (Ubosod) and the cloister area reflected lots of labour and serious intention to elevate the simple or humble old Temple of King Taksin’s reign to the same level of prestige as those temples sponsored by Kings of the new dynasty on the other side of the River. This going back to learn about my own cultural heritage has made me rethink Thai history.

King Rama I had made the crown prince responsible for the renovation of Wat Arun and the construction of the new Ordination Hall (Ubosod)of the temple. The Crown Prince was also the artistic sculptor of the face of the Buddha in this Ubosod Hall. King Rama II had adopted this temple as his Royal temple of his reign. The old decoration and art work around the Ordination Hall including the wall murals inside just tell me a story of the dedication of craftsmen in the old days. There is a pervading stillness and peace inside the Ordination Hall. An urn containing King Rama II’s ashes was placed under the base of the Buddha in the Hall.

King Rama III had a new grand design of Arun temple’s Pagoda, this project was undertaken and finished during the reign of King Rama III. This new Pagoda or Prang has become a very beautiful and iconic landmark by the Chao Phraya River. Wat Arun has been renovated again during the reigns of King Rama IV, King Rama V, King Rama 9th and Rama 10th.

During that day there was a monk giving blessing prayers to people and sprinkling holy water for those who requested. Many Thais including me went straight for the water sprinkling with bamboo brush and some Thais requested white cotton threads to be tied around their wrists for good luck and protection. This white cotton thread is called ‘sai-siln’ which has been through some blessing ceremony and chantings so that the protective vibrations would be embedded in these white strands of cotton.

I noticed that the atmosphere inside the Hall was very quiet and peaceful even though there were people coming and going all the time. People seemed to become naturally calm and quiet, they just moved about very slowly and carefully. There were couples of tourists lining up for what the Thais were requesting from the old monk. It’s so nice to see people being very solemn and gracious in this holy place. I think they could feel the positive vibes inside the Hall.

I just wish I had more time to go around old and historical temples to learn about our old culture and to connect with healing vibrations. These are hidden oasis amidst the concrete jungles in Bangkok.

เราเคยไปเที่ยววัดอรุณหลายครั้งสมัยเป็นเด็ก แต่เราไม่เคยเดินไปภายในบริเวณวัดข้างใน เราก็เดินเล่นในบริเวณด้านหน้าพระปรางค์และพระวิหารน้อยสองหลังที่สร้างมาแต่สมัยโบราณ ครั้งล่าสุดที่เราไปเที่ยวมา ทำให้เราค้นพบสิ่งที่ไม่เคยรับรู้มาก่อน ซึ่งทำให้เราประทับใจในวัฒนธรรมในอดีต เราต้องกลับมานั่งค้นหาประวัติความเป็นมาของวัดอรุณ

ถ้าเดินไปข้างหลังพระปรางค์ จะพบโบสถ์หลังใหญ่ที่สร้างด้วยความวิจิตรปราณีตมาก แสดงถึงความตั้งใจและฝีมือช่างในสมัยก่อน โบสถ์นี้ถูกสร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่1 โดยให้พระพุทธเลิศหล้าฯเป็นผู้ควบคุมดูแลการก่อสร้าง พระประธานในโบสถ์ก็ถูกปั้นพระพักตร์โดยท่านด้วย นี้เองจึงทำให้ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่สอง วัดอรุณจึงเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลของพระองค์ และยังมีการซ่อมแซมพระปรางค์องค์เก่า และพระวิหารด้วย และใต้ฐานพระประธานก็เป็นที่เก็บพระอัฐิของในหลวงรัชกาลที่สองในเวลาต่อมา

ในรัชกาลที่สาม ก็มีดำริให้มีการออกแบบพระปรางค์ใหม่ให้มีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นมาก จนกลายเป็นสัญญลักษณ์ที่เห็นเด่น อยู่ริมแม่นํ้าเจ้าพระยาทางฝั่งตะวันตก การก่อสร้างเสร็จลุล่วงในปลายรัชกาลที่สาม ในสมัยรัชกาลที่สี่ก็มีการสร้างรูปปั้นเทวดาประทับที่หลังโบสถ์ วัดอรุณได้รับการซ่อมแซมอีกในหลายสมัยรวม สมัยรัชกาลที่ห้า รัชกาลที่เก้าและสิบ สิ่งที่ทำให้เราแปลกใจคือ การที่รัชกาลที่สองทรงรับวัดอรุณเป็นวัดประจำพระองค์ และมีการบูรณะวัดอย่างอลังกาลโดยราชวงค์จักรี ในสมัยพระเจ้าตากสินนั้น วัดอรุณเป็นวัดเก่าแก่ที่ทรุดโทรมเพราะสร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา และพระเจ้ากรุงธนบุรีไม่มีเวลามาทำนุบำรุงวัดให้ สวยงามสมกับเป็นวัดในเขตพระราชวัง

บรรยากาศในโบสถ์เงียบสงบและมีความนิ่งมาก แม้ว่าจะมีคนเข้ามากราบพระประธานตลอดเวลา ทุกคนที่ย่างกายเข้ามาสามารถสัมผัสความพิเศษของพลังเงียบที่แผ่กระจายความสงบนิ่งไปทั่ว วันนั้นมีหลวงพ่อสูงอายุมาคอยประพรมน้ำมนต์ และผูกด้ายสายสินให้ชาวบ้าน เราก็ขอร่วมรับนํ้ามนต์กับเขาด้วย ที่น่าแปลกใจคือมีนักท่องเที่ยวมานั่งเงียบๆในโบสถ์ แล้วเขาก็พากันเข้าคิวเพื่อให้พระผูกสายสินที่ข้อมือให้ กริยามารยาทของเขาทั้งสี่คนบ่งบอกถึงความเป็นผู้มีวัฒนธรรม และได้รับการศึกษามาอย่างดี เราคิดว่าเขาคงสัมผัสพลังพิเศษในโบสถ์ได้ ช่างโชคดีจริง เราคงต้องหาเวลาและโอกาสไปเดินเที่ยววัดเก่าแก่ในกรุงเทพฯ เพื่อเรียนรู้ถึงรากเหง่าทางวัฒนธรรมของเรา และไปสัมผัสกับพลังพิเศษที่ยังแอบซ่อนอยู่เงียบๆ
