SUNGKA

Sungka is an old and very traditional Filipino Game that has been passed on from generations to generations. I remember playing it at the house of my grandparents when we were young then. It is one of the pasttimes that we loce doing during family gatherings. At our time, we were not too exposed to any gadgets that we see today as they were pretty expensive at that time. I rarely see the yougters of today playing sungka either.

When we had our lunch at Balay ni Tatay (which I will make a review in a separate post, maybe dont pressure me hahaha!). Mind you, the place is a few minutes away from the city. Balay ni Tatay which means Father's House is a farm-based restaurants. I was shocked and as well happ seeing a Sungka there.

How to Play

It is actually very easy playing Sungka. The rules can be changed depending on what conditions you may set. The general rule here is to capture or gather stones to your head, the player with the most stones wins the game.

The Sungka is a carved oblong-shaped wood with with seven holes in two rows. Each holes are called balay (houses) and one big ulo (head). The game only consist of two players, each player owns a head to their left side.

As you can see in the picture above, there is also the stones or you can use any other round and small objects such as rocks, pebbles, shells.. etc. Each seven holes will be filled with stones of the same number in all the holes except for the head.

The players will do bidding who goes first. One will choose which hole he/she will start emptying. All the stones will be distributed one by one in each holes through a clockwise direction even passing the opponents side. Likewise, once the distribution reach the his/her head, the player has to drop one stone too. If the last stone was dropped to a hole with more stones in it, the player has to empty again the contents and continue distributing all the stones at hand.

If the last drop falls to an empty hole on the opponent's side, it becomes and end move. The other player may start emptying one hole from his/her side.

However, if the last stone falls to an empty hole on the player's side, the player gets a bonus! The last stone as well as the adjacent hole or directly across the hole of the opponent side, all the stones are captured and transferred to your head. But if it is empty, nothing is captured.

Each player take turns simultaneously until each one make an end move. The game ends when there is no more holes to empty.

Seeing Sungka has sent some nostalgic memories of my childhood. I was glad that my childhood was not really corrupted with technology that much. I had truly enjoyed my youth with family and friends through a variety of activities to do just like playing sungka.

Little Mãli here had also enjoyed playing with sungka even though he has no idea what was it. Actually he were more inerested of the white stones, he kept transferring them from one hole to the other.

Omg she's adorable!! I believe the game we have here similar to that is called mancala ... I think. I play that game when I visit my godchild and her two babies. It's pretty fun and my little buddy wins most of the time but I never played till they introduced me to it.

Hahahahahaha Miss @monchhichi23 Litlle Mãli is a boy! 😄😀.. sorry for confusing you if his long hair he really looks like a girl though.

Hmmm.. mancala.. i have never thought that this game has reached other places too.. but i am soooooo glad to know that it is familiar and you know how to play it. Ye it is really a fun game for the family. Im sure your godchild enjoyed it winning as much as my little boys. Hahahaha they just want to hoard all the stones to themselves!

Hahaha ya know @maquemali... I knew he was a boy from reading your post love and I thought I typed He lol... my bad doll... He is freaking adorable!! Lol

Isn't it our job to let the little ones win? At least till they get older and less cute then we can show them what its like to lose ... which is also a valuable lesson.

Hahahahahaha no worries miss @monchhichi23!😉

Ooohhh yes definitely gotta let them win. They are just so cute to let it pass.. Anyways we already have had lots of wins in our lifetime.

And as they grow they learn to accept defeat and just be sports. We just have to remind them that it is just a game, just enjoy and have fun.. no no no to ill feelings.

I am not sure now if where is this originated! 🤣😂🤣.. nonetheless, i love playing this game! Its like making strategies how to hoard all those stones to yourself..

In Malaysia it is also a type of traditional game which is quite interesting. But nowadays these kind of traditional games were slowly been replaced by ipad, console, VR etc. no matter how the technology moves, these tradition should be kept.

You are quite right!! Technology has eaten up the young minds of our children. I am strict on the usage of gadgets here at home. I wiuld always tell them to go out and play with their friends. Hehehe

That is why I was sooooooo happy seeing Sungka in the resto! It was a great idea really to pass the time while clients are waiting for their orders..which the service were actually took quite long hahaha.. and we do not mind at all, we were pre-occupied with something..

I know tbis game!!! I played it so much (and well😉) while growing up but its being a while si ce i last played it, its called "Darâ" in Hausa" (one of the Nigerian languages). We do have them in such structures now, but back then, we dig little halls on the ground and play it in them. The stones are usually distributed four per each hole and its six holes per player.... That's how we get ourselves dirty then 😀😀😀😂, the game does help sharpen one's mind and I can remember playing it literally all day with friends.

There is one came too that has to do with the stones and hole, but that one is a bit different. It uses just one hole with the stones in it, then you will hold anther stone in your and, throw it up and before it falls back, you bring out those stones in the hole with your hand, then catch the stone you threw up. You will do same to push the stones back into the hole (but you will be picking stones with each round according to your level, when the stones in the hole finishes, you go to the next level. The more the level, the more the number of stones you take.

I dunno if you get my explanation or i confused you . Lol🙃 thag one is called charapke....dunno if i got the name right...😀

Afi kitty!!!!! 🐱🐱🐱🐱

Meow meow meow!

Yayyyyyyyyyyy! Its really amazing to note that this game has many versions and names all over the world!!! It never occurred to me that we have similar games.

And to know that you dig holes before such structures were made was brilliant!! Hahahahaha yeah it does sharpen our minds cuz we seem to find ways and strategies on how to get all the stones!

Hmmmmmm... i kinda played something like that too but we called it jackstones! Hahahahaha are you familiar with it too.. we seem to do so many tricks with it.. hahahahahaha oh my god we ate digging out childhood memories! Hahahaha back to memory lane im loving it!

Naaaah i aint confused at all.. i could just imagine! Haha

Posted using Partiko Android

Hahaha! Now I wonder how all these games came to be, they seem to be all over. Maybe it's not native to anywhere and everyone just simultaneously came up with the idea? Or maybe not... Lol

Yes yes! You gotta be sharp, if not one would keep losing...😀 and no one wants that!!!!

I checked jackstones up and we did play that type of the game too. There are a whole lot of games that we did play with stones back then... Yeah, playing that has many tricks and styles one has to master... I never went far with it.

Really fun and beautiful memories...we could recreate them someday, just like you seem to do with adorable Mali...

😀

Hahahahahaha yess! I guess this game has gone from one country to the other. And each have their own revisions of the game. Funny how we have different names for one similar game. I find it very interesting at all. Who wpuld have known this too had gone internationally.. sooooo awesome!

True! We need to stay sharp to win hahahahahaha.. no one wants to keep losing.. 🤣😂

See! Jackstones are all over tbe world too. Yeah it has a lot of tricks and I hace quite mastered a few!! Oh i could just remember childhood and the contests we have had in presenting different tricks hahahahahahaha..

Im loving all this walk to memory lane. It was such much nicer to play with toys instead of being stuck up in gadgets!

Posted using Partiko Android

Playing with toys is far far better! Hahahahah! I think it somewhat promotes togetherness and helps us learn more and sharpen our brains...

Yeah... Funny how the same game has different names. But I do love that it does though, it quite interesting... Now, I wonder how many other games we have in common...😀

So sweet to go down memory lane. So many pleasant memories....😀

It is sooooooooo much better! And it will help build your character even more..

I pity some of the generations of today who are sucked in the technology. They are soooo addictive to it that they forget how to do human connection anymore. Somehow, I am teaching my kids to play with the world and not with gadgets.

Hahahahaha i am loving it too that we play same games! I wonder now where did it all started. Who taught and played it first..hmmmmm interesting thought eh.

Posted using Partiko Android

You really are doing a great job with that. I have to learn from you,😆😆😀

Gadgets are cool but too much of it are just too limiting... There is a whole world out there to explore!

Yeah... That's quite an interesting thought but that probably is the part of the puzzle that we may never find out.... Let's just enjoy the game!!!!!!😀
