Black Hawk-Statue Friday

in #esteem5 years ago (edited)

Today is #StatueFriday, a challenge by @erikah

My statue is of a man who lived along the banks of the Rock River. The US government snookered his tribe with a treaty which forced them off their farm land in Illinois and sent them west of the Mississippi River. After being forced to leave, they did not have time to plant crops and store food and after a particularly harsh winter, with many people starving, the 65 yr old Blackhawk brought many of his tribe back to their land in Illinois , where they knew they could successfully grow food.

That was the start of the Blackhawk War. The battles claimed about 70 U.S. troops and militiamen as well as settlers. An estimated 500 Sac and Fox were killed.

This 40-foot statue of Chief Black Hawk by Lorado Taft stands on the bluffs above the Rock River at Lowden State Park in Oregon, Illinois, about an hours drive down river from where I live.

Impressive statue. Appropriate for NHL season opening :)

My city kids go to Blackhawk games frequently, but that never crossed my mind when I posted this!

Oh, I like this comment! What a great way to get more eSteem exposure and give me an opportunity to say thank you to eSteem!

Nice entry Melinda, he must lonely, standing there alone :)
Can you please check your email?

At least he has a great view out over the land he loved!

howdy there melinda010100! oh my! I love native American stories. So he led his whole tribe back, it sounded like and they were not welcome. That statue is massive! I really like that.

Many white settlers had taken over their gardens while they were away. Abdrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln both fought in that war. As a matter of fact Lincoln had his horse stolen from him not too far from here. Much of the war took place all along my River.

what in the world? Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln both fought in that war? I didn't know that either one of them were soldiers!

And I thought that was in Illinois not Wisconsin? I'm lost.

It started in Illinois and they chased Blackhawk and his people- including women and children up the river.. they made a river crossing just a ways up from my house and camped at places very near here. They traveled across southern Wi heading back toward the Mississippi River but the soldiers caught them there and most all of the tribe was slaughtered.

oh wow. So this was another horrible disaster by our government that never should have happened. Well that's depressing but interesting so thanks so much for filling me in on this.

Thanks for sharing that. It was interesting to see.

That is a nice piece of history and i love the name and size of this statue he must have really been loved for someone to build him up so tall.

Hey @melinda010100 i got some cemetery photos for you i didn't know where to put the link so i thought put it here much easier for you to find i think.

Oh, I'm m so glad you let me know! I would have hated to miss them!

My pleasure !!

It's a big statue and the background all those trees and those colors look great.

Thanks! The statue is beginning to crumble and they are trying to raise money to do repairs.

I hope they raise the money and can repair it, it's a wonderful statue
