Household greenery

in #esteem6 years ago (edited)

Houseplants bring the beauty of nature from outside into our homes. They enhance the space and decor of any room. A variety of plants is wonderful, however my favourite are the ones which require little maintenance. I love the plants highlighted in this post and I realise that some have been my “friends” for a long time – they have become “family members”.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)

This plant is more than amazing. The Royal Horticultural Society has stated that the Peace Lily can help to alleviate skin dryness during the winter. How? Because it transpires – losing water via it leaves into the air thus keeping it moist. A natural air humidifier. In addition to that it purifies the air by removing toxins such as gases – carbon monoxide and other air pollutants emitted from wood, furniture, paints etc. The Peace lily does not need direct sunlight but if blooming a bit more light is needed but never direct sunlight. The plant is quite strong and will survive the warm indoor home temperatures better than other plants.

The White Moth orchid (Phalaenopsi)

Orchids are most likely my favourite plants – it is simply a majestic plant. Treated well they continue to grow and bloom more than once. Orchids do not require much water – the key is to ensure proper drainage. During warm weather, water once per week by placing the plant roots under water thus drenching them then remove for drainage. For instance, place the plant in a bucket or sink full of water then remove and allow to drain. During cooler weather or winter, keep the plant warm i.e. room temperature and water only once per month.

The Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)

This Jade plant grows very well and will flourish depending on the size of the pot it is in. The plant will also bloomed if it has the right amount of sunlight. It is a succulent plant hence requiring little water and not much attention. The leaves are a green and glossy, trimmed with a hint of red. It is truly a sturdy plant which will always greets you with its beauty even after 3 weeks absence, like after a vacation.

Chinese money plant or pancake plant (Pilea peperomioides)

This lovely plant is somewhat rare and hence is not very well known. Its care is similar to that of the orchid as it loves well-drained roots. The Pancake plant likes light but not like direct sunlight – it will turn slightly yellow as a signal that it is in the wrong place – but that might be too late. This little plant is an attention grabber because of its round leaves with the white dot and unusual name.

These are my favourite house plants as they survive and thrive easily. Hope you like them.

I think it's good to keep house plants or perennials. At least for me i find something calming about maintaining them.

Absolutely - these plants are part of the family because they have been around for so long. My jade plant is about 7 years. Yes for me as well - it calms me as I need to handle with care so I slow down.

Seems you know so much about the plants you have in your house. I can see why you referred to them as family members. Lol. someone would think that you're a horticulturist with the sort of detailed description you gave. Kudos plant man

Hi @resuscitate - yes I made it’s my business to learn about these plants before I bought them. I really needed plants that would beautify but also fit into my lifestyle and home. Yes, indeed these plants are niw family members. The Jade plant is 8 years old. I am a female by the way - but not a big deal.LOL
