The remains.........
This is the Radboud Castle in Medemblik, in the north of the Netherlands. The date the castle was built is uncertain. What is certain is that it existed during the 1200's.
The castle fell into disrepair or was dismantled - so the photo shows only a small portion of the original structure - the remains - which is still impressive.
There is also little left of the original interior, but there is still a collection of artifacts and objects that tell the story of the castle's medieval history. Visiting the castle is also fun for children as there is a scavenger hunt.
In its recent history, the castle is no longer a fortress. However in 1939 it was the first hiding place for "protecting" the Nachtwacht (Night Watch) by Rembrandt. The painting was moved there from Amsterdam before the Nazis invaded.
The castle adds to the charm of this picturesque little village, by the Ijssel-meer (lake).
