The Magnolia Flower
On my first visit to Benalmadena, I was dining at a restaurant with my friends when I noticed these pods on a tree nearby. Out of curiosity, I asked my friend Annie if she knows what those were, since she’s been in Bebnalmadena for almost 3 years. However, she didn’t know either. So, in her broken Spanish, and a lot gesturing, she asked the restaurant owner if he knew. He didn’t know either. Annie even asked the guests at the nearby table. (She talks to strangers in trains and buses.) Surprisingly, no one knows. Or maybe, they do not know the English name for it. Anyway...
So, we had to ask the entity that seems to know everything – Google. It was only then that we realized they were Magnolia pod. And it was also then that I learned of the interesting history behind the Magnolia flower. They come in a variety of colours – white, pink, green, and purple. The flower symbolizes many things, nobility, pride, poise, dignity, strength of character, endurance, perseverance... and each colour of the flower symbolizes something as well – beauty, health, joy, purity, love... However, the meanings and symbols varies according to cultures and locations. The Magnolia flower is certainly fascinating and intriguing.

An interesting fact is that Magnolias were here before the bees, and they had to be pollinated by beetles. I guess the bees now help to pollinate the Magnolias as well

According to my friend, Roger, Magnolias bloom sometime between April and May. From mid June, they will develop seed pods and sometime in October the seed pods burst open to reveal red seeds inside the pods like those of a pomegranate. It’s unfortunate that I won’t be here to see it. This picture is courtesy of my friend Roger.
