Steel Drum Music for Seniors and My Third Pinball Tournament In One Day! Part 2 Of 2

in #esteem6 years ago

This post will feature part 2 of what was a long and fun day.

For the first part of this day I played bass with @steelparade. You can see that stuff detailed in this ancient post here: https://steemit.com/esteem/@steemseph/steel-drum-music-for-seniors-and-my-third-pinball-tournament-in-one-day-part-1-of-2-99f8079f94cf8

Warning, run for the hills. Inspiration to some of this post's contents were contributed by comments from a couple really cool Steem neighbors.

Upside down Steel Drum Guy?

Yup, that's me. I started that name back in ol' 2017 around September er something... I was new to Steem at that time. Actually my anniversary is probably really close... today? Anyway, I still take pictures of @steelparade's upside down steel drum, and I was doing it way before Steem came along. It's nice to have a destination for this kinda stuff. Please enjoy this weird collage. I didn't have many images from the same day.

Maybe if I zoom it will look more interesting:

A #Googlyeyes coincidence!

I can honestly say I collected these images of googly fish decorations on the same day as part 1's senior center performance. The fish were hanging from the wooden slats above the audience in the patio where we performed. We performed music for seniors AND googly fish! My original plan was to put them into a different googly post later, but then @fraenk left a comment in part 1. His comment activated a googly synergy. Are you aware of his fun contest!?!

Pardon This Interruption For A Googly Eyed Break!

Just like real fish. Hard to see thanks to their camouflage. I would've had to stand on a chair and that wasn't a good idea that day, so let's just appreciate these googly eyes from a distance.

He also mentioned Sandy Bus in his original comment. So, here's a GIF of good ol' Sandy that I used about one year ago today (Nov 2nd). Not many have seen it so, I'm reusing it.

Now, let's take a look at the Pinball Tournament that was the second part of my day.

Pinball Tournament Budget Estimate:

Gas: $8 (22.2 mpg for 22 miles)

Parking: $2

Food: $15

Practice Investment: $5

League Fee/Tournament Play Investment: $20 (one time fee for 7 events is $2.85 per event.)

Total Tournament 1 Investment: $50

Let's Get Ready To Rumble!

Tournament 1 Santa Ana Pinball August 29th 2018

This tournament was a style where 4 people are grouped together. Those same 4 players go against each other for the entire night of league tournament play on 6 different machines. This makes a total of 6 rounds.

Below is the stats and notes I collected while playing. These notes could be considered raw to show progression.

Round 1

Batman was the first game We were supposed to play but the ball got stuck and the machine didn't reset properly after it was recovered.

Can you see the ball inside the white and red circle? It's not easy to see. One must try to see through reflection most of the time while playing, but the ball itself is reflection.

We moved to a pinball machine called White Water. My score was not good when we left Batman and I didn't do well on White Water either. I don't know it.

Last place score on White Water. Gotta do my homework on that later. I get to choose the next machine we play for round 2 because I was last in round 1.

Round 2

Demolition Man!

I've done some homework and asked for tips on this one. Just using the grips gives you bonuses.

Second place score with. 772,619,370.

Round 3

Metallica

Last place score cuz I couldn't activate the electric chair multi-ball. That was my best strategy.

Round 4

Iron Man

I’m player 1. Nobody scored very high at all.

  • I placed last. These are my tips for next time:
    • Shoot blue “Drone” Buttons for multi ball.
Shoot two orbits spinners and the middle spinner to activate a multi-ball.

    Round 5

    Centaur

Hey @overkillcoin here's that pinball machine I mentioned on Twitter. These reflections are unstoppable for me and my camera skills. Trying to get a top down view of the play field without a reflection is hard without being way, way above it. Checkout my GIf though...

Loling, because I remember thinking maybe this video GIF could provide perspective and depthn' stuff... but, nope. The reflection is hiding the entire top section of the game.

I’m was player 1. I lost and I really thought I would do better. I practiced this machine a lot because so many other players don't like it. I thought I would use that to my advantage in league play.

    Round 6

    Star Gazer

I know to focus on shooting the spinners to score high, but sometimes it's just hard to keep the ball in play.

I’m Player 3 and 4th place again. That was round 6, rep final round. I'm learning.

I'm not gonna lie. I sucked and came in last most of the rounds. Fortunately, this type of homework is fun, so I'll get better. I love salty rematches. That's where we replay all the games we played poorly during the rounds.

    My "Field" Notes:

This image below is a screenshot of the notes I took. It should appear as a shorthanded version of the details above. As the season progresses I will improve upon these notes and even create a template for myself.

    Fun Facts:

    • This is my third pinball tournament ever.

    • Technically, this tournament is not an official IFPA tournaments, therefore it will not have an international ranking. (DOAH!)

    • It's my first tournament as member of a pinball league.

    • I got owned, squashed like a fuzzy little chattering bug.

    • My homework on Demolition Man paid off, but I lack focus.

    Actual Pinball Tournament Expenditures:

    Gas: I get 23 mpg for 22 miles and 1 gallon equals $3.33) 23/22 x 3.33 that's a fule cost of about $3.48. Is that correct @mathowl?

Parking: FREE (I wouldn't expect this to happen again.)

    Food: $10

Practice Investment and 6 Rounds: $20 in quarters, but I retuned with 4.25. I used $15.75 of it.

    League Fee (one time): $20

Total Tournament 1 Investment is $49.23. I'm gonna call that $50 and simply say, "yikes!"

NEXT: Depends upon Steem... and YOU!

    Haha, it took a while.

But, the most important thing is that he had fun, right?

That’s great!!! Thanks for sharing and supporting!

Fun story! Better luck next time.

In the live recording when Phil is introducing the band members... after he introduces you then goes... "he looks like Jesus"... hahahahaha! I laughed so hard. I loved all the tunes as always. I wanna get some SoCal people together to meetup at that Taco Surf place where you guys play. I think I remember you saying it's the first friday of each month right? So maybe we could try to plan that for next month?

Lol, yeah we have fun. Lots of people say that to me. My Twitter bio once said, “probably tweets when called Jesus.”
I still do it, but not in bio anymore. It’s hard to keep up.
Phil has an great sense of humor! 🐒💨 😷

    November 2 and December 21
will be our next dates at Taco Surf (under the water tower). We are gonna play Christmas music with our steel drum, bass, and drums set island style.
Do you want to rally the SoCalSteemit neighbors? They accept reservations... should be free. Discord neighbors?

Awesome! I'm gonna bring it up in a post as well as in our Discord. I'd like to try to plan it for the 2nd. I see there is 5 Taco Surf locations, which one do you guys play at? And usually about what time do you play?

Cool, I mentioned it to Phil. I'll keep my eye on the SoCal Discord.
We perform at the Sunset Beach Taco Surf (under the water tower). It's just a little south of Seal Beach on PCH. 16281
    Gonna be fun!

Sweet. I'm gonna mention it in a post I'm writing for SoCal Steemit today, then talk to other members about it in the voice chat on tuesday. And if people like the idea, and I think they will, I'll make an official invite post next week with all the details.
