Grasshopper is an insect of the suborder of Caelifera in the Orthoptera order, which includes crickets and their allies in the other Ensifera subordo. They are probably the oldest living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic about 250 million years ago. Grasshoppers are usually insects that live on the ground with strong hind legs that allow them to escape from threats by jumping with passion

They are hemimetabolous insects (they do not undergo complete metamorphosis) that hatches from eggs to nymphs or "hopper" who experience five moults, becoming more like adult insects at each stage of development. At high population densities and under certain environmental conditions, some grasshopper species can change color and behavior and form flocks. In these circumstances they are known as grasshoppers.
