Your Body is Sharp, Your Mind is Sharper

As we grow older, there is a deterioration or loss of synapses. Synapses are the junctions between the interconnecting neurons that are the network of our brain. Our brain depends on these to keep a sharp mind and a strong memory. There are several tactics you can use to stimulate the synapses keeping it healthy, improving memory and improving cognitive functions.

Relax, don't worry about it.

Studies have shown prolonged exposure to stress can interfere with the function of neurotransmitters. Try taking a few minutes every day to relax, rest your eyes and forget about the world around you.

Don't drink too much.

Studies have shown alcohol consumption can be good for you...in moderation. Drinking more than one glass of wine (or liquor equivalent) will not benefit you any more than the first glass. Drinking alcohol excessively can cause shrinkage and cognitive decline.

Learn a new language.

No better way to improve brain function and linguistic knowledge than to learn a new language. Kids that learn new languages at an early age have shown better test scores, more advanced reading skills, and greater confidence.

Take naps.

Taking a nap for about 15 minutes can help consolidate memories and learning. Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison, two brilliant men, took naps regularly to increase productivity.

Use mnemonic devices.

Everyone probably remembers "Never Eat Soggy Waffles"; it's probably one of the most well-known mnemonic devices around. Mnemonic devices are verbal mind memory and learning aids. Other mnemonic devices include creating acronyms out of a list and rhyming.

Drink lots of water.

Keeping hydrated will boost the speed of neuronal firing. Stay away from excessive alcohol and soda, they will actually dehydrate you even more.

Exercise frequently.

Regular exercise can help executive function, learning, and psychomotor speed. Take 30 minutes out of your day to take a run around the block.

Practice juggling.

Juggling can increase the grey matter in your brain. Grey matter is a major component of the central nervous system.
