REFUGEES—A Passionate Plea for Compassion (2 Poems)
The case can be made that Syria is the moral crisis of our beleaguered times and that, given our great interconnectedness in the modern world, ultimately, we hurt ourselves by ignoring this tragedy.
Of course, mass displacement is a global issue not restricted to Syria, but also includes desperate refugees risking death to flee unfortunate circumstances in Ukraine, Africa, Central America and other places in our wounded world.
Historically, USA has led the world in terms of refugee resettlement, but this noble sentiment is souring. Under the Trump administration, and throughout Europe, we are witnessing the lengthening shadow of xenophobia, where victims are blamed for their suffering.
Below, are 2 powerful poems that address this catastrophe of 70+ million people displaced by conflict and persecution worldwide, 1/2 of whom are children! May these words help to soften hardened hearts and remind us of our allegiances to Others.

Violence is a virus and war is its plague. Plagues do not respect borders. When a plague breaks out the WHO runs to make sure it doesn't spread. Resources are mobilized and nobody argues that it should be just allowed to spread because it is happening 'over there'. Somehow we don't get that people die in war too and it can come 'home' at any time. Until peace is pursued in the same way that certain people spread war, everyone is vulnerable. Shame on those who are in a position to lessen the suffering of the world and its children and do nothing but reap the financial benefits of violence, Typhoid Marys and then some.
