Epic Games challenges Steam with its own gaming shop and a generous 88% cast for creators

Epic Games is known for being the company behind Unreal Engine and Fortnite. But for the last five years they have been trying to offer their products directly to the users. We have seen for example in his most popular game, where they have decided not to upload it to the play Store and yes allow download directly from their website. A movement basically promoted by the fact of not sharing a percentage of the profits with Google.

Now, the video game company announces the creation of the Epic games Store. It is a store of applications and games accessible through different platforms and where you can download both the games of Epic games and other developers. A platform that will compete directly against Valve and Steam, the most popular applications and games store.

The main difference of the Epic games Store with respect to other platforms like Steam is its distribution of the revenues. Epic will stay 12%, while game developers will stay 88%. In addition, in the case that the game is created using the Unreal Engine, the Epic itself will cover 5% of the usual rates of that engine.

In comparison, the cast is rather more succulent for developers than the current Steam mechanism. On the Valve platform, developers only have access to 70% of the profits. To which we must add another 5% in case the game uses Unreal Engine 4. The difference is very large and is a direct attack on Steam, however we must bear in mind that many developers will continue to preferring to pay more fees simply by accessing a much larger market.

It will depend on the evolution of the Epic games Store that is worthwhile or not the jump. But certainly this kind of movement is almost bound to the new stores that want to attract developers. Remember for example that stores like the AppStore or Google Play already passed from 70% to 85% of the benefits for the developers.

The new apps and games store will be available on a limited basis to certain PC and MAC users and at the beginning of next year it will expand to new developers.

It has not yet been announced that games we can find, but from Epic explain that there will be "quality games of all sizes and genres ". Including not only PC titles, also Android and IOS games. There will be no DRM, no forums but there will be refunds during the first 14 days. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic games, confirms to Gamesindustry.biz that they will offer a free game every two weeks and the store is available in most countries of the world except some like China.
