2017-11-12 Update: Big thanks to @isacoin who noticed some missing deposits from this report. A while back I excluded exchange transfers without memos to help avoid transactions which looked like exchange transfers but were actually transfers between exchange account owners (such as between @alpha and @blocktrades). By excluding transfers without memos, the report was missing a whole lot of valid deposits! This makes the deposit to withdrawal ratio much better at 2.24 to 1 instead of 7.74 to 1.

It's discouraging to realize this report hasn't been done accurately, but no one's perfect, and I've always tried to do my best to keep it as accurate as possible. I'm always open to correction and will continue to work at improving things.

I'm going to start a new deposit to withdrawal graph going forward based on this new information.

USD values are calculated per day via API feeds from Poloniex (for STEEM and SBD values in BTC) and Coindesk (for USD value of BTC). For the top 50 reports in USD terms, I take the average USD value for STEEM and SBD for the week using the daily average which came out to:

  • STEEM: $0.89878
  • SBD: $0.97239

Previous Report:

  • STEEM: $0.94657
  • SBD: $1.01445

Assumptions

Please see the first report for a detailed explanation of my personal assumptions related to what this data could mean (along with commentary on previous reports). What it does not show is people powering up, powering down, or if they are buying or selling on an exchange. It's just some interesting data dealing with transfers to and from exchange accounts.

Linked Accounts

hitbtc includes hitbtc-exchange and hitbtc-payout, freewallet.org includes freewallet, and openledger includes openledger-dex.

Commentary

  • The withdrawal to deposit ratio is down from last week but still high at 7.74 to 1. Turns out, it's more accurately 2.24 to 1.

  • Over a million dollars heading out to exchanges this week. With the deposits added that were missing, it looks more like $814k

  • Seems @dan is topping out the cash out list at $146k this week. Actually, @alpha tops that, but that may not be accurate as I also see a transfer from blocktrades to itself as Steem Power (that's the blank deposit listed above) in the same amount as one of the transfers from @alpha.

  • Reminder, just because someone is moving money to an exchange, it doesn't mean they intend to sell. I had an interesting discussion about that at SteemFest last week. Some people move to exchanges for various long-term holding tax benefits. Strange, but that's what I was told.

  • The decline in people powering down next week is 36.51% in the green compared to the previous week.

Thank you so much for brining this to my attention! Enjoy a full upvote (sorry, my voting strength is down a bit). I updated this report and will update last week's as well. A change I made a long time back to exclude exchange account transfers without a memo seems to be eliminating a lot of valid deposits when it shouldn't be.

It will be helpful to the community if you can keep updating the report.

I wrote some PHP code to interrogate the blockchain and it has been running well for over a year. Quite odd this didn't show up. I'll look into it. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.

Good work done

thank U

Great job from you my bud @lukestokes ...good that the deposite -withdrawal ratio looks better ...lets hope for more deposite in the near future.
In my recent post, I outlined reasons why people fail here and mentioned you there-feel free to see it. More success to you and keep up the good work.

ExceLLent post.

this is a great post

Excellent report! It's easy to follow. Sometimes other reports get quite technical and are hard to understand, but this one seem easy to follow :)

Interesting, I haven't ever heard of someone moving large chunks of cash to an exchange for long term holding. I'm curious how significant the tax benefits are compared to taking the risk of leaving a large chunk of your funds on a centralized exchange long term.

Guess we're always weighing risk/reward. Especially in cryptoland.

With whales continuing to cash out like this, the redistribution of supply continues on. With all the recent discussion about whales and what they should and shouldn't be doing, this can at least be looked at in a positive light in some way.

This is such a GREAT report!!
Luke, could i ask for your support on the promo steem initiative? I have written a proposal to consilidate the position of promo steem and move the initiative forward. hope it provides for quick, but interesting reading.
https://steemit.com/promo-steem/@starkerz/promo-steem-an-initial-proposal-for-the-next-step

I look forward to checking it out, thanks! I want to line up some projects I may support with delegation via my witness account. I need to spend some time thinking it through though.

NO worries man! My main concern for now is starting the conversation, and seeing where witnesses, Steemit Inc. and community wants to take it from there. Regards to this report, I know a couple of guys who were planning on putting this together. So u have saved them some work! This report is so important! Please let us know should u ever run out of resource to put it together. We need it.

I've been running it weekly for over a year. :)
