The first letters exist about 1000 AD and they were used in ENGLAND and it consists of 23 letters only. The A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y and last is Z in the order they occurred in the Latin alphabet, plus three runic letters on the end. These runes gave the sounds th, wy and eth.

The runes were unlike modern letters just like the picture you see above. The rune for th was written in þ and the eth was written in ð. There were also a number of letter combinations that were written in distinct form. The ae and oe were written as the two letters put in one together as æ and œ.

The runes were disappeared because of the usage gradually and had generally gone in the 15th century. An exception was the use of the þ rune if the sound th fell at the start of a paragraph. The rune gradually came to be written in a form almost indistinguishable from a capital Y. When printing arrived, this rune was represented by a Y.

The rune was replaced by uu by about 1300 and by 1600 this had become W which is the birth of this letter. Then the new letter U appeared around 1440 as the pronunciation of words containing the letter v began to vary.

Then the very last letter which is also a new letter J first appeared in the 1630s in words borrowed from French. The letter "J" made its appearance in other languages to serve different purposes. In modern Dutch, the combination ij is used to indicate the long i sound. So it is being used as a vowel or as in words like koninklijk. In fact, j appears in various contexts in Dutch, also representing variants both on the y and soft g sounds. So this letter is about 400 to 500 years old only and if you're wondering how the names with J before just like "Joshua" written, it is written like this ** YHWSHUA** and if it is "Josh" its is YWSH. Then bases on my research the name JESUS which is the name of our God is not given 2000 years ago. The named was spelled in June of 1632 within an English legal brief prepared from the Court of the High Commission in London England.

The ae, oe and ss letter combinations persisted in common usage until the 18th century, but had been abandoned from the regular alphabet by 1820 at the latest. That left the 26 letters that we know today in all schools.
