Manaia : Knash and the Legend of the Cursed Ones
Knash is a small mining village in Euchao, with a population of around 40,000 people.
The village is one of the most religious in the whole of Manaia, with almost every resident of the area being devout Sobanites.
For a man growing up in Knash, working in the clay and coal mines is a more than likely outcome, however some may find occupation in transit or security. With the recent influx of bandit activity in the region, either occupation is likely to be a dangerous one.
It is not uncommon for workers to go missing upon entering the mines. While they are often presumed dead, no bodies have ever been recovered to verify the suspicions.
It is believed by many of the superstitious occupants of Knash that the mines are cursed, and that demons animated by clay and of coal inhabit the mines and murder the workers before devouring them. The legend of the cursed ones is believed to such a degree that some men refuse to work in the mines. However, failure to pay taxes to the church results in exile to the prison island of Zarakash, and so afraid or not, the overwhelming majority of men choose to work in the mines. A morning church ceremony is conducted each day to ask Hehu for his blessings and his protection before heading off to work, and to pay tribute to those who have recently disappeared.
No reliable witness has ever reported a sighting of one of the demons, but the fear of them has proven to be a valuable incentive for citizens to pay the totality of their taxes to the church in order to curry favour with Hehu and attain a level of protection from God.

But the demons animated by clay and coal are sooner a modified version of the "golem."
I do appreciate your comment though. I am trying to create an air similar to that which surrounds bigfoot for my world. I want the readers to be able to choose for themselves whether the mysteries of Manaia are supernatural or whether they have a rational, scientific explanations.

I don't have many definitive beliefs about this world, however, I do have suspicions about many conspiracy theories, yes. I think most if not all of them have an element of truth to them. But I also question whether conspiracy theories in general are a conspiracy intended to evoke fear in believers, among other things that one might need a very open mind to entertain as a possibility.
But the notion of conspiracies in general seems a given to me. The idea that in a world such as this, powerful people would conspire to attain more power sounds foolish to disregard. One need only look at society to see that it was built upon shady deals in dimly lit conference rooms.
