WHAT IS YAM?
Yam is the common name for some plant species in the genus Dioscorea that form edible tubers. Yams are perennial herbaceous vines cultivated for the consumption of their starchy tubers in many temperate and subtropical world regions.
The edible starchy tuber of a climbing plant that is widely grown in tropical and subtropical countries.
Land is prepared in the form of mound or ridge or heap of 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) height.
The yams recommended for such soil conditions in Nigeria are white yam or white guinea yam (Discorea rotundata) and water yam or yellow yam (Discorea alata). Planting is done by seed yam or cut setts from ware tubers.

HOW DO YOU GROW A YAM?
Tuber Cuttings. After harvesting, yams have a resting period for about three to four months throughout the dry season before they make suitable seeds. Disease-free plants produce suitable cuttings for growing yams and need planting before they sprout, usually in August. Gardeners cut tubers crosswise into three pieces.

Àmàlà is a Nigerian food made out of yam and/or cassava flour. Yams are peeled, sliced, cleaned, dried and then blended into a flour, also called elubo. Yams are white in colour but turn brown when dried; this gives àmàlà its colour.

WHERE ARE YAM GROWN?
Yams (family Dioscoreaceae) are native to Africa and Asia and other tropical regions. Yams are starchy tubers that have an almost black bark-like skin and white, purple or reddish flesh and come in many varieties. The tubers can be as small as regular potatoes or grow upwards of five feet long.

DELICIOUS YAM MEAL PREPARED.

What Does a Yam Taste Like? Yams tended to be drier than sweet potatoes and they're starchier. They're often served boiled and sprinkled with palm oil in their native Africa, but they can also be roasted, fried, grilled or baked. ... True yams can generally be substituted in any sweet potato recipe.

USES OF YAM PEAL
Carotenes are very essential to convert Vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A maintains healthy mucous membranes and skin. It also improves vision. Vitamin C in yam plays an important role in anti-ageing, improves immunity, wound healing and bone .
