STEEMCHURCH: Yam Friday
The yam a great source of energy for the organism
The scientific name of the yam is Dioscorea alata and according to the study of its composition, this tuber concentrates its energy in the form of carbohydrates to protect the root, in the form of starch, but also contains proteins and zero fats.
That is why this native item serves as a moderate calorie contribution for those who need to make more energetic diets, such as girls, boys and the athletes themselves.
The yam has a mild nutritional composition, so it becomes the essential ally of people with delicate stomachs or convalescents, as it is very easy to digest. However, because of its high starch content, it is important to chew it well to facilitate digestion and that its intake does not produce gases.
PROPERTIES
BENEFITS OF CONSUMING ÑAME
NAME CULTIVATION
Yam is a genus of climbing perennial plants with tuberous roots. The plants are formed from their underground rhizomes, where the vines are born, and from these, the leaves, roots and stolons of the plant.
The yam is a dioic plant, that is to say that it has female flowers (as abundant) and male flowers in the same plant. These flower in irregular times, which hinders the process of pollination and causes the scarce production of fruits and seeds in this type of crop, which is only destined for the production of tubers.
WEATHER
- It grows full sun
-Item temperatures between 18 ° C and 34 ° C. These tropical plants do not tolerate frost. - Annual change between 1,200mm. And 1,300mm.
-From sea level to 800m. Tall. The yam has been a fishermen's food since ancient times.
FLOOR
-Texture of sandy loam soil. They do not favor the clay-loamy soils
-The low level of soil compaction is important. In compacted soils, the tuber can be deformed.
-The pH of the soil between 5.5-6.5
PROPAGATION OF ÑAME
The yam is produced vegetatively, by transplanting the rhizomes:
- Select the small yams from the previous plantation, weighing less than 2kg. It should be kept in a ventilated and dry place until the time of sowing. The rhizoas are cut into pieces of 100-150g, which are planted directly on the ground.
-For large yam cultivation, before planting, a disinfectant treatment of rhizome pieces (called vulgar as seeds) is carried out.
-The plow is necessary before transplanting the tubers, to obtain a loose soil that promotes the growth of the plant and its roots.
-The planting is preferably done before the rainy season, between the months of April, May and June. The date is calculated so that the harvest takes place between November, December and January.
-The planting is done manually. Before planting, he must have carried out cultural work in the field, such as plowing, raking, hoyada and sowing.
-The sprouting occurs at 5-10 weeks depending on the species.
NAME GROWTH CYCLE
Yam is a perennial plant, although it is treated as an annual plant in crops. In its growth there are three phases:
Vegetative growth:
Phase that begins with the bud and development of the stems, leaves, new roots of the plants; 5 - 10 weeks after planting. Through the first months of growth the stem has few or no leaves, since at this time the stems and roots are first formed in that order, later the leaves. The richness of potassium in the soil is important to favor the foraging of the tubers.
Productive growths:
The tuberous roots and bulbils swell, while the stems and leaves decrease the rate of growth. It is the moment when the plant blooms, and afterwards, its tubers mature, which are harvested in the next resting stage, after ripening.
Phases of rest and maturation of the tuber:
Phase preceded by the flowering of the plants, which coincides with the dry season. The tuber matures, while the aerial parts of the plant lose turgidity, the stems and leaves decay and the tubercle separates well from the stem.
CULTURAL WORK
-Aporco: It consists of covering the tubers that are discovered since they would turn greenish by solar exposure, and favor the aeration of roots.
-Clear: They are made only in those tubers that grow too close together. Thinning is done to eliminate the elements that grow too many together thus favoring the thickening of the roots.
-Weed control: In all crops, weed control must be practically perfect before they interfere with the crop.
-Control of the aerial development: In some cases it is possible to proceed to the blunting of the guides or main branches to edit the excessive development of the plant, and to favor greater production of tuberculo.
FERTILIZATION
It is important soil rich in organic matter for better soil fertility and greater water retention capacity of it. The yam requires a generous potassium to favor the thickening of the tubers.
HARVEST AND STORAGE
The harvest of the yam should be made between 7 and 12 months after planting the item. The harvest moment is characterized by the withering of the aerial parts of the plants: the stems are few turgid and the leaves turn brownish. The distal part of the tubercle is brown.
The commercial crop, the harvest is done mechanically or manually. The first is faster but can cause more damage to the tubers, while manually removing the tubers carefully with the help of a carver or a coa.

marvelous post
This is very interesting and informative. this tuber concentrates its energy in the form of carbohydrates to protect the root, in the form of starch, but also contains proteins and zero fats. Before planting, he must have carried out cultural work in the field, such as plowing, raking, hoyada and sowing. one of the nutritional properties of yam is its vitamin C content, which prevents cell damage, which prevents the possible appearance of cancer. @therealwolf 's created platform smartsteem scammed my post this morning (mothersday) that was supposed to be for an Abused Childrens Charity. Dude literally stole from abused children that don't have mothers ... on mothersday.
