I have to confess that I have never heard about the mites but today I will share with all of you what I learned!

Mites are very similar to nits, are parasites that lodge in the skin and live from it, which is dry or infected, causing itching, pain and sometimes embarrassment and social rejection by friends and family. Scabies A skin disease that is characterized by acute itching is related to mites, since one study found that most of the time it is produced by this parasite. There are several types of mites among which we can name we have the dust mite, recognized by the allergies it produces, others cling to pets while there are other types that can be found in the yards or gardens. Since there is so much diversity of this parasite the form of extermination is very different for each one of them.

Are mites a problem for health?

In the fall, dust mites are a problem in every home, affecting the quality of the air we breathe every day.

Dust mites are close relatives of ticks and spiders. They love living on mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains; since they feed on the scales of dead skin, both humans and animals.

And especially in the fall, dust mites and their droppings are a major allergen that affects millions of asthma sufferers and allergies to these mites. Since we can not see them, because they are microscopic, we breathe them continuously, both them and their feces.

One study found that up to a third of the weight of a pillow after 2 years, consists of live and dead mites, dust, mite feces and dead skin. A mattress can have almost double the weight for 10 years.

The problem: dead mites and their droppings

To be precise, mites are not the problem, they are their droppings and their decomposition into organisms that cause a variety of health problems when they are inhaled. These excrements are so small that they can be inhaled and deposited directly in the alveoli.

The result is nasal discharge and other respiratory symptoms. Inhalation of mite particles can cause asthma and trigger an asthma attack.

A particularity that dust mites have is that they tend to be located on sofas, pillows, mattresses, stuffed animals; among others. It is thanks to the depth of the filling and moisture retention that these parasites prefer to be there.

Those found in animals such as dogs and cats, are fixed in the skin and feed on their blood, which results in ulcers, itching and infection in the animal. Keep in mind that when pets have this parasite they can infect people.

Mites feed on the remains of human skin, hair and nails. They reproduce at an incredible speed, since the female lays 20 to 80 eggs and these reach adult life in approximately three months.

MIRRORS IN OUR PLANTS

Mites as well as other types of pests jeopardize the maintenance and growth of our plants. It is for this reason that it is necessary to be informed about it and to work so that they do not ruin all the work done during the whole time of sowing and maintaining them in our urban garden.

Within the mites we can find different types of pests, but the best known of all is the red spider. They are a very small plague type, since it only measures less than half a millimeter, which makes it very difficult to observe them with the naked eye.

At the moment when the mites are present, they attack the leaves and gradually discolor them. For example, in the tomato or cucumber, the coloration begins to change to the tone of tanning. In other cases, the symptoms that it generates are that the leaves appear with yellow spots (as it appears in the previous image). In the pepper and potato plantations one might even find the leaves folded over the edge, so the effects are diverse but always affecting the leaves firsthand. In general, mites appear with very hot and dry weather. It is also possible to see it when there is very low humidity and very high temperatures.

These characteristics make us to be very careful with mites in summer, when temperatures and humidity are very high.

So that the mites do not appear it is good to take the initiative to completely eliminate the remains of crops as well as all the existing weeds. The crop must be at all times with very high moisture values, especially, as we said earlier in the summer months where temperatures are very high.

In the case that the crop is already infected with mites, the best way to combat them is to use a product such as potassium soap or neem oil which will help to clean the leaves completely and thus eliminate those mites that to simple view are impossible to observe.
