Farms:Advantages of raising ducks

in #farms6 years ago

Ducks, like other birds, can be used for their meat and eggs. There are many ways to raise ducks. The simplest method requires little capital input and the ducks are raised with other farm animals as part of a mixed farm

To decide how to raise ducks, the farmer or agricultural extension worker must ask several questions:

Are the ducks for your own use or do you also want to sell duck products? If you are considering raising ducks to sell your products, it is important to know if there is a market for eggs or meat.

Does the raising of ducks fit with the rest of their activities? Do you have space for the ducks? Not only do you need space for shelter and a water supply for the ducks, but also, your daily care takes time and could hinder the execution of other activities.

Where are you going to get ducklings to keep a flock? Will you play them yourself or will you buy ducks when you need them? If you plan to buy them, can you be sure there will be a regular supply in the future?

What will the ducks feed? Where can you get food for ducks? Is there enough food available on your own farm or will you have to buy some types of duck food? Ducks are able to look for much of their food by themselves, but it is often necessary to give them additional food in the dry season. If ducks roam freely, they are more likely to suffer from a lack of vitamins and minerals.

Advantages of ducks compared to chickens:

Ducks are stronger than chickens; they require less attention than chickens and are less likely to get sick than chickens.
Ducks are larger than chickens, so if they are raised for their meat, there will be more to sell. The eggs of the ducks are also larger than the chicken eggs.
Ducks do not necessarily need complementary grains and corn.
Chickens usually need high quality complementary food. Ducks eat more plant material and insects than chickens. Ducks also eat snails.

Disadvantages of ducks compared to chickens:

Ducks are waterfowl and need water to reproduce and grow well. A pool or pond can take up a lot of space. They can also be provided with a water pit so that the ducks can bathe. Every pool, pond, pit or water tub should be kept clean and hygienic.

The duck (also known as Barbary duck) has less need to cool down and, therefore, has less need for a constant supply of water to bathe. The Pekingese duck originally comes from colder climates and lives near water. These ducks need water to maintain the temperature of their bodies at the correct level.

Main breeds of meat

The domestication of the ducks has allowed the development of a series of races that fulfill diverse purposes and that allow us to obtain a wide range of utilities.

The races can be grouped according to their aptitude for the production of meat and / or egg.

The main breeds of meat ducks are:

  1. AYLESBURY.

  2. BEECH

  3. MUSCOVY

  4. MULAR

  5. ROUEN

Requirements per stage

It is necessary to know the requirements of the ducks in terms of temperature, ventilation, lighting and space, in this way the ducks will grow in adequate conditions, which will avoid health problems and stress, which will help to have greater productivity.

From the reception of the ducks and during the first weeks of life, we must have a greater control over the environment of the ducks, since they are in a period of adaptation, at this stage the ducks are more susceptible to respiratory diseases, so the air currents will be avoided, the heating bells will be closer to the floor and their temperature will be higher than during the rest of the aging.

Breeding

The breeding is the period that goes from the reception of the ducks, until their departure from the farm to meet their zootechnical purpose. During this period the necessary adjustments will be made to the equipment within the farm and in nutrition to meet the needs of the ducks' growth.

Feeding and nutrition of the duck
Like other monogastric species, the largest percentage of the total cost of producing ducks is used for food.

a) PRESENTATION OF FOOD

The presentation of the food is very important in the ducks, studies carried out by Dean (2001) show that the flours overlap the ducks' bill, some authors recommend adding water to the flours to improve the live weight and the conversion rate, in addition to reduce the waste of food. However, when preparing food in this way, there may be problems due to the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms (Lázaro et al, 2004).

b) ENERGY NEEDS

The granulated foods for ducks contain 2,800-3100 kcal ME / kg, it has been observed that foods in flour with less than 2,600 kcal ME / kg reduce the voluntary consumption and negatively affect the growth of the ducks (Lázaro etal, 2004).

c) PROTEIN NEEDS

There are discrepancies regarding the protein needs of the ducks due to their capacity for compensatory growth. The ideal is to provide an adequate level of protein in the initial period of growth, in order to avoid deficiencies. When using high protein levels the concentration of carcass fat at slaughter is reduced slightly.

The duck is raised above all to obtain meat, but also for their eggs that are used, for example, in the preparation of traditional pies. Duck meat is highly valued, despite its high fat content, because it is considered a very thin meat to the palate. Some highly valued products that are obtained from the duck is foie gras ("liver") and to a lesser extent the liver pate. To obtain the quoted product called foie gras, the duck (usually the male) is subjected to forced feeding. (food is given, literally, by a funnel) based on foods with a high content of carbohydrates (especially corn in grain), for 15 or 20 days through the process called embuchado or "gavage" in French. Duck is not a pure liver because it is added to this product different soups, bacon and other meats and other ingredients, such as flours or milk. On the other hand, for the manufacture of the pâté the animal is not subjected to a forced feeding. The feathers of duck also have their utility for the man. Although products made with eider duck down, such as anoraks, quilts or sleeping bags, are much more well known, due to the great isolation capacity of the plumage of this Nordic bird, the plumage of the duck is used as a material filled with different garments. With the down (the finest and densest feathers that waterfowl use as a natural shelter) ducks (and geese) sew quilts, anoraks and other products. You can even use the feathers of terrestrial birds, such as the chicken, to cover textiles. Another usefulness of the domestic duck that departs from those mentioned, is to keep this animal as a decorative element of cities and towns.

Meat and egg

It is important that we add to our diet the meat and egg depatos, which are very tasty and can be used as ingredients for delicious dishes and preparations. Duck eggs have protein conditions similar to those of chickens, not strong smell as people say and they can be eaten fried, hard and as ingredients in different foods. The meat of the duck is little known in our country, there are many recipes of exquisite dishes that are prepared from it, but it requires a greater promotion so that more masters decays cheer up to cook it, to introduce it to the family diet.

Duck Tips

The duck defecates excessively and you must clean your habitat daily and the water where nothing to avoid infections.

Before your first month of life you must be careful when swimming because you can drown.

The males fight when they are together. It is better to have a male or a couple for every 5 legs.

Their average life is between 9 and 12 years.
