Reading - My Nightmare! - Lezen - Mijn Nachtmerrie!

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “What is your genius?”
Attributed (maybe falsely) to Einstein.

Let me lay out the background for my nightmare. I am an Australian living in Netherlands, all through my life I was terrible at learning new language. My father and mother were immigrants to Australia and although they spoke functional English, my father found it quite difficult. I remember being slightly ashamed and embarrassed about that, something that I now later regret!

So, some might call it karma, now I find myself in a similar situation. I am in a foreign country where Dutch is not my native language, but something that I struggle with constantly. Ik doen mijn beste, maar ik vind talen veel moeilijk om te leren (I do my best, but I find it really hard to learn languages). I guess we are all better at certain things, and definitely languages is the tree to my fish brain! In many ways, I take after my father, abstract thought is relatively easy and calming, languages are quite confronting!

We have chosen for our children to go to Dutch schools, although we (the parents) are fish out of water, we are doing our best to integrate and we want our children to grow up as fully interacting members of the society that they grow up in.

So roughly once every 3 or so months we (the parents) need to do the voorlezen for the whole class, where the parents come in and read stories for the children in the class. My wife does this pretty well, she had studied languages before in university, whilst I studied less useful things!

Today was one of these days, and not that the older child is graduating up to the next class the last for a little while (at least until the younger one hits this age). I am happy speaking in English in front of groups of people (just not being in a group) and my career is based around being on stage in front of many people, so I know how to handle stage fright. But, sitting down to read fairy tales in Dutch to a group of 4-6 year olds, this gets my heart pumping fast!

Just to paint a picture of me reading. In Dutch, when I'm reading out loud, I read like a 8 year old. I read word by word, with no ability to see ahead in the sentences. So it comes out a bit stilted and sometimes mispronounced. Occasionally, there are words that I don't understand, but I sound them out anyway!

So the selection today, was the "King with No Clothes", a short story about bullying and another about fishes hiding in the sea. It was seriously the longest half hour of my life (apart from all the other voorlezens!).

In the end I managed, there were no casualties apart from my pride and dignity! The kids seemed to understand my mangled Dutch, and my child seemed proud of me. In the end, I only hope that my daughter is a more forgiving child than I was and isn't too ashamed of her father that speaks funny Dutch!

My cousin moved from the US and enrolled her kids in Dutch schools even thought the parents speak no Dutch. They felt it was important to give the kids a chance to fit in. They are there for at least 3 years on a job assignment. Would make it hard at home if the kids can chat in a language you don't understand...lol

Ah, a Shell or NATO family... We don't have that problem, we understand and can speak Dutch to an extent (the kids are just faster learners), but reading and writing are difficult for me to do in real time. I'm in a Dutch Discord, and I can't keep up!

Also, when I say we speak Dutch, I have a feeling that I come across inarticulate. No nuance, only message...

Army Core of Engineers actually.

Sorry I might have been reading way to fast too. Trying to do multiple things at once does that sometimes.

Hola @bengy amigo es bueno ese apoyo que das a tus hijos, espero que pronto domines mejor tu holandes... un saludo desde Venezuela.

Dankjewel, hola en bedankt voor uw antwoord! Groetjes vanuit Nederland!

Keep practicing and you will get there! Sometimes being thrown into a situation like that is the best way to learn. I am sure the kids are happy just to have an adult spending time with them and reading to them even if it isn't super fast or super fluent. Very cool post!

Yes, in the deep end is the way to go! The kids are mostly okay with it. In a couple of years that might change...

You know @bengy, I thought I would never need English. 5 months ago I did not know him at all. But, one day, one wonderful person, a musician from Canada, called me his brother. Do not just turned to me, type .... hello brother. No, he said that we are now brothers, he is an uncle for my children, and I am an uncle for his children. We have correspondence, he is in Canada, I am in Moldova. But, it's cool, I started to understand English from the sheet. It helps me now that I'm on Steemite. Yes, I use an interpreter, but I understand the essence of the matter. Another thing, I wanted to make a video in English. I kept all the phrases in my brain. When the camera turned on ....))) the cow ran up and tongue licked all my thoughts from my brain. Vacuum, a natural vacuum appears in the brain when the camera is turned on)) I am grateful, to all my friends here, for the patience they show when reading my illiterate English.

Wow, really! Only 5 months, that is amazing! I would have thought you had many years already!

I only knew a couple of simple words, nothing more. Now some thoughts come in English. ))) I dream of playing the guitar and singing in English Somewhere over the Rainbow, while I do it only in Russian. My mouth still can not have time to pronounce all the words that sing Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Just practice and finally youll be able to master it soon. Having to experience something like this will finally turn out to be your strength, just never lose hope.

Thanks! Yes, practice and being brave enough to speak it in public, that's the way to learn!

understand my mangled Dutch, and my child seemed proud of me.

That right there is all that matters :)

Yes, that was the most important thing to me! Hopefully, it won't change as she grows older!

The kids likey enjoyed the reading, they are still learning, they may be kids, but they do understand things. I came into reading quite late in childhood, had difficulties learning to read:

Occasionally, there are words that I don't understand, but I sound them out anyway!

That is how we all learn, and it was likely a lesson the kids took to heart, seeing an adult have the troubles they sometimes have, and working through them. Your daughter was right to be proud of you, you showed a group of learners what it is like to learn.

The funniest bit is if they ask what that word means... I have to delay them until the teacher comes back into the room!

Ah, but they learn and you learn. So a win all the way around.I myself have not even tried to learn a second language, so kudos to you and all those people that do speak more than one.

It takes courage to read in front of natives in their language(no matter that they are kids), and it is great that your kid was proud of you. It is a lesson to me also. I know some Italian and I am often in the opportunity to use it, yet I avoid it, because I am embarrassed.Maybe I should try climbing some trees, to get rid of the embarassment

Yup, climbing the occasional tree is good for all fishes! I really try to speak it as much as possible, but I find that somehow, reading out loud is much slower.

Kudos to you for stepping up and doing that! Getting out of our comfort zones can be really intimidating, but very rewarding also!

Haha, I'm not that brave. It is our duty as part of the school, every parent has to do it! If I had a choice I would run the other way or look studiously at the ground...
