Call duck is a duck used by hunters to attract other ducks.

Before I go into my introduction to this Call duck, I will give a little explanation about this duck and how it got the name.

They are a breed of domesticated duck raised mainly as pets but these ducks were initially used in hunting, where their calls and quacks would attract wild ducks towards the hunter.

Nowadays Call Ducks has almost entirely been replaced with artificial Duck calls.

This one was at Skiff Lake near the shore by my sister’s cottage in New Brunswick.

Call Duck was friendly and came up on the lawn for a visit.

Later it was found out Call Duck was a pet who had escaped his enclosure and was enjoying the freedom of being on the water.

Call Duck’s owner did not live around the lake. They had a hobby farm about 1/2 mile away and kept the duck as a pet.

I don’t know if Call Duck could be kept down on the farm after he has seen the lake.:)

That is so interesting! I knew hunters used decoys but had no idea real ducks were used for that purpose! Again, You have a duck that I have never heard of. They are so cute. And quite fascinating!

Actually I had never heard of a Call duck until the day he appeared at the lake.
My brother, a forest ranger, was there and told us what kind of a duck it was. Everyone was wondering as the duck looked so pretty and tame.
One evening when we were sitting outside, he came up on the deck of the cottage for a visit. I haven’t heard if his owners ever captured him but he certainly enjoyed his freedom.

I hope he found a flock of other ducks to hang out with and lived happily ever after

Wow, I never heard of that... Call Ducks. I had to look that up and read more. Lovely shots, what a pretty bird! Thank you for posting in Feathered Friday. Voted and resteemed. Greetings from suddenly snowy Victoria! Have a great weekend :-)

Thanks Keith. We are having a bit of reprieve from snow..must have went your way. Enjoy & have a great weekend. 😊 ⛄️

It's soooo cold I can't handle it! It's just barely above freezing, can you believe it? :-)

You folks are pampered with your normally fab weather...I’m envious.
Hopefully this is a short spell of cold weather for you. 😊

Now this is what I call a happy duck. I'm pretty sure its owner will soon find out that ducks and water cannot be separated. 😂

Thanks Roxy. True...will be hard to keep Call Duck away from the lake now. He was having a great time and even started being accepted by the black ducks that live on the lake.

As odd as it might be I didn't know about this hunting strategy. So hunters just released some tamed ducks in order to attract several wild ones... how they manage to avoid that the call duck escapes? Didn't the call duck panic when the hunter fires at the wild ducks? Anyway, your photos are gorgeous :)

Thanks for sharing your shots with us, best regards.

Thanks so much Joel @joelsegovia. I think the hunters sometimes tethered their Call Duck but many would have escaped at times. They may come back to be fed.

Ha! very interesting redheadpei! I've never heard of a call duck before, pretty clever!

Thanks Cowboy. Happy you found the post interesting. 😊

Very interesting. I have never heard of call ducks. I have seen some very impressive decoy collections though :)

Thanks @steven-patrick. Call Duck was used as a decoy but a pretty live one. 😊

Interesting tidbit of info. I bet the live ducks are much better at attracting game then the wooden ones are :)

Thanks Rent @rentmoney. Yes, you are probably right .
