Nankeen Night Heron at the Beach.
This is my first entry for the brand new and very exciting Feathered Friday challenge organized by my friend @keithboone Not only is this a wonderful opportunity to enjoy his superb bird photography but it allows others who love birds as well, to share their images from around the world.
I was delighted to find this beach-loving Nankeen Night Heron at Glenelg Beach in South Australia when visiting this picturesque place. He was enjoying the scenery just as much as I was, watching young boys diving off the jetty, people attempting to catch fish, while others were jet-ski-ing, swimming or relaxing on the beach.
Nankeen Night herons are also referred to as 'Rufous Night Herons' and are found in Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia and in many parts of Australia.
They grow to approximately 60cm tall and have a slightly stooped appearance. They are not entirely nocturnal as they often feed during the day and their diet consists of small fish, reptiles, insects and on occasions, eggs. Their preferred habitat is near freshwater rivers, lakes, bulrushes, estuaries, harbours and in residential fishponds on the hunt for gold fish.
The Night Heron breeds from between September to April and uses a variety of sticks with which to build their nests. They lay up to five light green eggs and after a 22 day incubation period they develop as fledglings for about 49 days.

Ahhh..I see...are they there at the beach everytime you go or is it just a matter of luck to see them?
That was a matter of luck but my other Nankeen Night Heron photos (not this post) were taken at a wildlife reserve.

Thanks very much for your welcome visit @steven-patrick I have only just recently discovered this interesting heron. I had to do a bit of searching before I found what it was called. We have a variety of herons in Australia and I love taking photos of them whenever I get the opportunity.

My pleasure indeed Keith. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it in time because I was at the hospital all day with John. He's been in a lot of pain with his face and it turned out to be a perforated ear drum. So we are both very sleep deprived atm. Hopefully the medication will kick in soon and he'll recover quickly.

Thanks Keith. I can't sleep during the day.....no matter how tired I am but I'm hoping for a better night tonight but mainly for John. He can sleep on a bed of nails......unless of course, he has a perforated ear drum. (lol)

We have black-crowned night herons here, although they are not commonly seen. They are stocky like your night heron. More common here is the much larger great blue heron.
