Murderous Intent: A Fifty Word Story

in #fiction6 years ago

"Pumpkin, you're dirty." She knelt and brushed his chubby cheeks clean.

She squeezed him lovingly. "And you're getting so big." She tucked a blanket around him.

He failed to win the prize, so she cut him in half then scooped out his guts.

Soon the house smelled of roasting pumpkin.

This week's fifty word prompt by @jayna is PUMPKIN.

We have pumpkins in our own garden and oddly enough yesterday I murdered three of them, scooped their guts, roasted them in the oven, and scraped the pulp out, blended it, and measured and packaged for the freezer. I use it primarily in pumpkin bread, chili, and soups. But I don't go for any pumpkin prizes, although some we have this year got quite large. I could never fit a half of one in the oven. Not even sure they'd go quartered. Maybe an 8th at a time... But the small ones are a better eating quality. It's my first time having that type so I didn't want to rely on them alone in case they didn't grow well here. But our hot dry summer has resulted in a bumper crop of pumpkins, thanks to my husband's careful watering.

Oh, that's hilarious!

I have four gallon bags filled with chopped up pumpkin sitting on my table waiting to be cooked. Ben and the kids chopped it up last night because Ben wanted the guts (he really likes pumpkin seeds) and the kids were having a blast helping.

You cut it up first? I half them, scrape guts, put on baking sheet cut side down, and bake for an hour or two or more depending on size until it's soft. Then peel off skin or scrape pulp out and mush with stick blender.

So far i am drying seeds for next year but will roast from the next batch. 3 small baby pams gave me about 8 cups of firm pulp.

Nope, I usually do it your way: but I had an excitable crew who wanted to cut it up, so cut it up they did.

I usually throw the pulp in the food processor and blend it smooth if I'm going to be baking, or just mash with a fork if serving for dinner.

I think we're getting about 10 - 12 cups from the big pumpkin we did. It was $2.50 at Aldi. I'd say that's a lot of bang for the food buck.

Wow. At some point I thought she was murdering a baby. Good job.

Then I have succeeded at my goal!

Oh, I see what you mean by your comment about a similar theme as @negativer. All I can say is: Great minds think alike! Cleverly done.
