What Kind of Technology Do Farm Punks Have?

in #fiction5 years ago

It seems like just two days ago that we kicked off the new farmpunk fiction writing contest. Oh, wait! It was two days ago. And the beautiful thing about it is, we have a cornucopia of #writing themes to explore for November. In a nutshell:

  • Cornucopia is itself a theme
  • Thanksgiving
  • Plan your epitaph
  • Sadie Hawkins dances
  • Guy Fawkes (eh-uh-eh-heh, nervous laughter)
  • Clean out your refrigerator
  • Toilets, or, er, outhouses
  • Start your own country
  • Red Planet
  • Square dancing

The key of course is not just to write a fiction story around these themes, but to write a farmpunk fiction story around one of these themes. While the setting doesn't have to be on a farm, the story should include some aspect of farm culture juxtaposed with high #technology. But that creates a little bit of a challenge, doesn't it? What kind of high technology might a farm punk incorporate? Well, that's what this post is about.

I'm stoked

As you may know, there's an #exquisite-corpse rounding chapter 6 right about now. If you haven't been keeping up, you can read each of the parts below:

Next up: @dranuvar followed by @blueteddy and @bennettitalia.

I'm stoked because in the first exquisite corpse @quillfire got picked up by @curie, which was a great achievement because it was his first. Imagine how excited I was this morning to discover that @fromage got listed by @appreciator on the Daily Quality Content Rewards post. Congratulations @fromage!

Let this be a testimony to all who see these words. If you think this is all just for fun (believe me, it IS fun), then think again. My followers and fans get huge rewards just for playing my silly games. You should play too.

Technology Ideas for Your Next Farmpunk Story

To be honest, it doesn't really matter to me which theme you explore for your farmpunk fiction story. You can mix them, if you wish. But you'll have to figure out a way to incorporate high technology into your storytelling. So I've come up with a few ideas for you.

Actually, Cellarius came up with a few ideas for you.

If you're struggling with some ideas for technological innovations you can include in your farmpunk story, try some of these:

  • Prosthetics - If you can imagine #prosthetics as cosmetics, then you're perfect for farmpunk. Think about how prosthetic implants could be used as a beauty aids. Things like implanted bookshelves as eyebrows, mirrors implanted into a person's cheeks, or an extra set of arms and hands just below the natural limbs a person was born with. Just to name a few.
  • Augmented reality - Augmented reality is a layer of virtual reality on top of the real world. How might farmers use this technology? Well, if you own a 10 thousand-acre farm, you might not be able to see it all from one spot, and how long would it take you to visit every spot on your farm? But a barn fitted with the right equipment could allow a farm to see his entire farm, or multiple farms, and view overlaid statistics above each crop telling him how much of each crop is producing, how much is being eaten by vermin or being lost to disease or weather conditions, and whether or not they are getting enough sunlight, water, etc.
  • Crypto-mining farm equipment - What if some enterprising farmer retrofitted his John Deere tractor to mine #cryptocurrency while farming?
  • Selling energy - Suppose a farm had windmills that churned out a ton of extra energy, or powered a private electric grid, and sold the energy on a free market? If a farm had a large enough water table, perhaps it could convert that water to sustainable energy and sell it on an open market to its neighbors.
  • Space-traveling farms - Imagine a group of adventurous earth dwellers deciding to ex-patriate the planet and move to #Mars. They'd need food, wouldn't they? Well, suppose they built a space ship large enough to house a replicated agricultural ecosystem from home that would allow them to farm their own food in transit.

You might get your own ideas if you read this blog post at Consensys.

Here's another idea: What if some billionaire decided to turn his farm into a city, created his own cryptocurrency, sold plots of land, and put it all on a blockchain. What problems might ensue?

There's no limit to how far you can go with technological prowess in farmpunk. You've got three things to incorporate into your story to give it the right amount of flair:

  1. High technology
  2. Punk culture
  3. And this month's theme, one of this month's themes, or a mixture of this month's themes

I'm fully confident you've got this covered, but I'm anxious to see what everyone comes up with. This should be an awesome contest.

I may need to have a crack at this farm punk soon. I've been stewing on it for a while, and am thinking that contemplating it is getting me nowhere.

Yes, inaction is NOT action. Get cracking, @steveblucher. I'd love to see what you can come up with.

I wish I can write like you guys!!

You can! Just pick up your pen and start writing. For hours. Every day. In 20 years, you'll be a pro. :-)

20 years!!!! Hahaha

It doesn't happen overnight, my friend. ;-)

Tell me about it!! :D
But I'm more to doing sketches, better stay that way...
