Flash Fiction: A Lucid Experience

At exactly 4:50am before the morning bell rang at a Catholic high school.

A time when the beauty sleep sets in. Ayo woke up as he does everyday to ring the bell at 5am. Just like clockwork he wakes up at the time his wrist watch alarm will sound. Something was wrong with his routine. However, the watch won't give a sound. Maybe it is broken he thought. He puts his watch just beside his pillow on the bed before going to sleep.

Lazily floating his arms to pick up his watch.

It was nowhere to be found.

He sleeps on the top bunk; maybe it fell to the ground. He jumped down to search. Bending a kneel to search the ground but there was nothing.
Too many maybes reasons for why it was missing was running in his head. He wasn’t ready to get into any conclusions.
Sigh!

He scattered through his sheet like a rabbit digging a hole hurriedly.

                  Good grief! He exclaimed.

My watch is gone. He concluded. There was no way he could tell the time. Without thinking twice he dashed out from the 4th floor running down the flight of stairs. The gust of wind from the heavy down pour flared up on his face. In that instance he missed a step.
Crashing to the ground about to hit the floor. Like a flash bang a huge white light flashes before his eyes. He wakes up on his bed.

Dang! It was a lucid dream.

The alarm should have woken him up to say the least. This time he is conscious of his environment even more. There is a heavy pouring outside as he stares through the window on the 4th floor as the water dampens and drips on the glass creating a blurry image of the darkness outside which comes clearer when there’s an episode of lightening. He checked under his pillow for his Casio computer watch, alas it was not there. Perhaps nothing has changed. Carefully he searched for his watch but to no avail.
He didn’t want to waste any more time so he put on his rain coat and rubber boot. He stepped into the windy corridor to go down the flight of stairs. He took the first step, the second and third about to take the next he couldn’t somehow feel a solid ground but he still insisted.

Good grief! Down he goes realising that the step ended there. Falling slowly with the rain drops. He woke up as he was about to hit the ground floor pavement.
Sweating and panting heavily. His heart was pacing like he just ran 100 meters. In confusion he was. Trying to find answers to why he can’t seem to find his watch or go as far as reaching the bell.

Right on the bed gazing at the ceiling watching the fan roll with cracking sounds. With a little more pace, he checked for his watch yet again knowing fully well that he wouldn’t find it. He picked up his rain coat and rubber boot coupled with a torch light.
He stepped out once again. Flashing the light down the flight of stairs. All seems good to go. It was quiet and misty. The grim of the heavy pour makes the descending even more challenging. He took the stairs steadily to affirm not missing a step. Every step he takes makes the building weaker. Before he could take the 13th step the entire building came crumbling down.

Boom!

He wakes up back in the loop.

It was prank night in the catholic high school. The whole boarding school was literally on fire. All sort of pranks and tricks filled the atmosphere. It is a long standing tradition that has become a prestige and pride of the students that other neighbouring schools have adopted this glorious night. Every final year student has already been pranked except from just one person. Ayo, the time keeper also known as the greatest prankster holding a record for never being pranked in his entire school career. They needed to get back at him one way or the other. Something subtle to mess with his mind. Making a move on his most prized possession his wrist watch given to him by his late grandpa. It was a dick move but what the hell he had it coming. His roommate agreed with the plan all they had to do was leave the room when he fell asleep. The prank team picked up his watch up from the bed while putting some grease on his footwear.

It was Thursday. The sky was lit up with lighting and thunder with a heavy pouring. It would seem Asgard was celebrating as the night was filled with roars well not so much for earthlings as it would seem for Ayo tonight. He woke to notice his watch was missing. It was dark in the room so he needed to turn on the light. He dropped from the top bunk to put on his slippers as he made away to light up the room. He lost balance at the moment whitelist trying to get a grip with his left foot but all was to an epic fail. He took a trip to the hard concrete floor, crashing in the process.
Yes they got him. They dashed into the room to find him unconscious. He was rushed to the medical center. The joyful morning bell that gets everyone up for the day was rung for emergency purpose.

Present Day

It has been 2 weeks since he was brought into intensive care and proper monitoring at the general hospital. His brain activity shows that he is alive inside. When it comes to coma cases like this we need to exercise patience or pull the plug. He can remain here for days, weeks, months or well we hope it doesn’t turn out to years. His case is a special one and we are hoping that with a trial technique of treating patient with lucid dream we can have a breakthrough with him to wake him up. Whatever it takes Dr. Adams please proceed his parents requested.

He was taken in to the ER for the trial procedure. From here onward you can no longer follows in to the room. His mum held his hands tightly one more time like it as the last as she released him slowly latching onto her husband. Both of them watched the doctors in blue shut the door as their baby was taking inside the ER.
The sat on the quiet corridor with sinister thoughts of the worst.

Ayo! He heard a strange voice. He heard his name once again then responded. Wonderful said Dr. Adams. I am in your dream, I am here to guide you back to reality. Follow the sound of my voice. He followed it to a pay phone. All of a sudden he was no longer on his bed or in a room. He was in a void environment all in white with a black pay phone ringing in the middle. He heard whispers saying; “Pick up the phone”
And so he did.
Hello…

Hello can anyone hear me.

There was a little distortion then he got a delayed feedback after 4 seconds. How are you Ayo? I am Dr. Adams. It is time for you to come home.
I will count down from 3 and at the snap of my fingers you will wake up.
