Lightning Gold - A Steampunk Western Story For Steemit!

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

This story is a submission in @neoxian's Daring and Intrepid Steampunk writing contest. The contest was asking for steampunk shorts.

The short story below is written with slang and a southern/western accent. The grammar and spelling reflect this. It's intentional. I'm stating this now because I've posted short stories on the platform before with narrators and characters speaking in slang and accents, and readers have asked me why I didn't fix the grammar. (lol). If you don't get it, then it's not for you.

Enjoy.

Betty Grows Up

The night they came, Betty hid in the attic rafters. Her hands clinging to her mouth, too scared to even breathe, The Darkheart’s men drug her mother and father out. Her mother cried, begging them to leave them be. Betty expected that. Her mom was soft. Always crying about her dead sister. Always warning Betty to keep her hands clean, to be a good girl. Always telling her daddy not to take her out for a hunt on the steamhorse.

Wow, that was really good, thank you for entering my contest.

thanks for hosting it

AHhh this is my favourite kind of ending, and it builds up to it so well! I love the bits of inner dialogue, such a great touch. Have to admit, I now kinda want this to just be the prelude to the story of the person Betty grows up to be...

birth of a villain

Extremely good story, thank you, and congrats on the win.
