It was a hard day at work and Mercia was on her way home. It was a bit later than usual, but she had to finish the project that was due tomorrow. She was too tired to cook, and stopped at MacDonald's to get some comfort food. She started eating the fries on her way home.

By the time she arrived home, she had already gobbled up the burger too, and walked into the house drinking what was left of her soda. She knew that overeating was not going to help her in any way, but when she was stressed, she just couldn't help herself.

She threw down her handbag on the sofa, and went straight through to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of wine. She switched on the television and watched a soppy girly movie, while she drank wine and ate a packet of chips. She felt lonely, tired and irritated. Most of her friends were married already, and some even had kids, and here she was all alone. She felt as if nobody cared about her and felt utterly sorry for herself.

She hated her life. Her job was time consuming, and she hardly had time for herself. She hated every minute of it, and although she earned a good salary, it was not always worth the effort. She's picked up so much weight in the last few months, because there were so many deadlines at work.

Just before eleven, she got up to go to bed. She didn't feel good, but she knew she would feel better in the morning. Sleep always helped a bit, but it still did not change her situation. She was twenty nine years old, with the perfect job, and enough money to support a family of her own, but she was always alone. She didn't have time to even look for a boyfriend, and with all the weight she picked up, she was sure no one would be interested in her.

She fell asleep feeling miserable and alone, and for the millionth time, cried herself to sleep.

Mercia woke up just after six, feeling just as miserable as the previous night and got up to go take a shower. After the shower she stared at herself in the mirror. It was as if she saw herself for the first time in weeks. All she could see was a fat, ugly person. She hated her body and she clearly had no self esteem left.. She wished there was some miracle cure, but she knew that there was not. She got herself into this situation, and she was the only one that could get herself out of this situation.

She took a long last look at herself, and made a decision right there and then to change her ways. She needed to feel better about herself, and she had to find a positive way to help herself.

She phoned the office to notify them that she was not coming in. Today was the first day of the rest of her life, and she was going to change her ways...come hell or high water!
