The rest of the morning went smoothly.  Claudia was only starting work in two days, and everything was nearly unpacked. David played around in the apartment while she made sure everything was in the right places. By two o clock she was done.

She wanted to prepare their first dinner that night, so she took a quick shower and called David so they could go down to the shop.  She found him on his bedroom floor playing with a train set her father bought him the year before. He was such and easy going child, and smiled when he saw her.

"Come baby, we have to get to the shop. I want to cook dinner tonight. Are you excited about your new room?"

He nodded and put the train down.

She locked the door behind them, and took David's hand when walking down the stairs. She promised that they would go to the park after shopping and he seemed very excited.

The store was only two blocks down the road and they were there in a jiffy. She bought what she needed and saw a bright red ball that she knew David would love. He was excited to see the ball and he carried it under his left arm as if it was his most prized possession.

As promised they went straight to the park from the shop, and Claudia sat on a bench while David kicked the ball around. He seemed to enjoy it, but there were no other kids around as she had hoped. She let him play for half an hour while she soaked in the sun and then he came back with a droopy face.

"It's no fun without any friends..."

"Perhaps next time there will be some friends that you can play with David."

He nodded, but still looked a little bit down.

"Come, you can help me make dinner...it's your favorite!"

His eyes lit up and he grabbed the ball. She took his hand again and they walked across the road to get back to the apartment.

David went straight to his room while she unpacked everything. She started cooking and within an hour she was done. David sounded happy, because she heard him laughing several times. Even though he sounded a little upset earlier, that seemed to be forgotten now.

She set the table in the kitchen and dished up. She called David to come eat dinner.

He seemed quite happy when he ran into the kitchen. It looked like he was having some fun on his own in his room. She laughed and asked.

"What were you doing in there? Were you playing with your train set?"

David shook his head.

"No... we were playing with my new red ball" David said and immediately started to gobble down his dinner.

"Can my new friend Damian join us for dinner tomorrow?" he asked with a mouthful of food.

"Did you go and play outside while I was cooking? You can't go out alone David! We don't know anybody here yet. What if someone grabbed you or even kidnapped you?"

Claudia was panic stricken.

David smiled.

"I didn't go outside mom, Damian is my friend that lives in my room with me.....so can he?"

Claudia felt a bit rattled, because she had no idea who he was talking about. There was no one else in the apartment and she felt an ice cold chill run down her spine.

"Sure honey, but don't you think we should ask his mommy first?"

"Damian doesn't have a mommy..."
