LOVE LIKE HIS - Chapter 36 - THIS ENDS TONIGHT

The situation has gone from bad to worse. Cromwell is at the bar, hard at work trying to get wasted, but so far that release has escaped him.

It’s as if years’ worth of pain and sin has suddenly been let loose upon the detective for him to deal with all at once. At the moment, it’s drowning him. His thoughts are running rampant.

If Gary’s story is true, then this whole situation is completely messed up. Every time the detective has been led to look more closely at a case, there was always a guilty party that had escaped justice. This time, though, it seems that there is no more to the story.

Has this whole thing been orchestrated by God just to make Cromwell realize that he’s a guilty sinner in need of a Savior?

While it is impossible for the detective to honestly claim that he is without sin once his life is compared to ten commandments, he would rather not go there at the moment.

As far as Cromwell is concerned, it is not him that needs to apologize or ask for forgiveness, it is God. That’s the way that it always has been. Cromwell lived a good life, and had a good wife and son. It was God that allowed them to murdered, and it was God that didn’t protect them.

No, the detective wasn’t going to let any of this be used in an attempt at turning the table. So what if he was married for longer than Gary? So what if he had years’ worth of enjoying his son before he died while Gary never got to meet his child? Who cares if Gary found the one responsible for the death of his loved ones and forgave him while Cromwell still didn’t know who killed his family and was nowhere near even close to forgiving them? Who cares?

None of that makes it right. None of that makes any of it better. None of that shifts the blame from God to Cromwell, and he’s not about to make the first move.

The detective orders another drink, but his mind is still not able to escape.

The overwhelming feeling of guilt is unshakable. So far, the alcohol hasn’t been able to wash the dirty feeling away. Still, he’s trying not to budge.

It’s not that Cromwell doesn’t believe that God exists. Deep down, he knows that this is true. His problem is that he’s angry at God, and believes that it is God who is in the wrong, and not him. Unfortunately, he can find no comfort in any of that at the moment. His attempts at justifying himself are falling short, he feels unclean, and not even the alcohol is able to help him so far.

Laughter bursts out at the other end of the bar again. Other patrons are oblivious to the detective's plight and are having a blast. Cromwell sneers out loud, making a disturbing growl that he did not intend to be audible. Another solitary drinker nearby can’t help but take notice and look.

Obviously this guy is having much greater success at the bar tonight than he is. He giggles uncontrollably and points his finger at the detective repeatedly.

Not in the mood for any of this, Cromwell pulls back his suit jacket to display his pistol.

Along with the gesture, he contorts his face to display an even more ominous glare. The other drunk grins like the Cheshire cat and digs deep into his pocket. Once he hits the bottom, his face glows with delightful surprise. Cromwell is actually intrigued at where this is going, but is not letting on.

In another second, out comes his hand again, this time shaped like a pistol. Then man almost points it at the detective, but just before he lines up the shot, he spins the finger gun back at his own head and places it on his temple.

He clicks his thumb a few times as if he is unloading a few rounds into his skull and then tips his head down towards the bar. Instantly, he spring back up with his glass to his mouth and finishes the drink in one giant gulp. The empty glass is slammed back on the bar and the man smiles successfully.

Cromwell is already miles away in his mind and has no further interest in the man.

“This ends tonight,” he mutters.

With that he arises and heads for the door.
